Any one had any success with Vista yet? I refuse to go buy an adapter unless I know it's going to work.. otherwise, I'll keep using my 1/3 visible screen 1999 Gateway beast.
:) |
Well, went out and bought a Keyspan adaptor--was expecting no trouble.
No success, though (Vista Premium Home). I'm going to try messing around with it though... I'll let everyone know how it goes. |
.. OKAY. Couple of things to add for Vista users:
-Make sure your computer is FULLY updated. -Make sure you have administrator access on your account -Make sure UAC is turned off (Control Panel->User Accounts->Turn User Control On or Off). You'll have a hell of a time modifying the DosBox config file with it on--this is what screwed me up. -Bite the bullet and buy a Keyspan adaptor. I used multiple DB9->USB adaptors with no avail.. you'll spend more than the $40 bucks it costs you to get the Keyspan in cables before you know it. -For me, the Keyspan defaulted to COM port 4, so make sure you do as Claudio said and change it to 1. -If you follow Claudio's directions exactly, you should be just fine. I did get it to work (as I stated in previous post, I have Home Premium), so if you're having trouble, don't give up! =) |

of course my dumbass has problems running dosbox
I did everything you said, then clicked on the dosbox icon on my desk top. two windows open, computer makes some breaking sticks sounds, then the windows close.............. It never prompted me to type DIR. What did I f up? |
Do I need to have the haltech hooked up for DOSBOX to even pull up?

Make a folder with all your DOS Haltech programs and maps and put it in the root directory, C:, and call it 'Haldos'. Yes, DOSBOX opens 2 windows, one of them is a sort of dialog window that displays how DOSBox is working, the other one is where you do all the work. You type "DIR" to pull up the directory with all your files inside that folder within dos box, its just a DOS Command, so, if your E6K software is just named E6K, type "E6K" in the Dos Promt window and the E6K software should launch. Also remember that it helps to press the ALT+F12 a few times to increase the speed the software works at, i normally set it to 8000, works fast enough for me. |

Did you do these 2 steps:

Dont mean to revive a really old thread here but I am getting really frustrated with this.
I have my car ready to start, all I need to do is put a map on the E6K and crank it and I cant get my laptop to connect. I have the TrippLite USB to Serial adapter with the correct driver insalled, DOSBOX with all the correct changes to the conf file, everything set to com 1, UAC disabled, running Vista Home Premium, and all I get when I try to connect is to Reconnect Haltech. If you guys have ANY other tips to this please put them out there since I am out of ideas, I'll continue trying until you guys post up. Thanks, Renzo |

Thanks, Renzo http://forums.haltech.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1817 Its also quite possible if nothing works for you that the ECU is either not powering up or there is damage to the comms chip and thats why you cant communicate, its not uncommon for that to happen as well. Make sure the ECU is powering up by checking to see if the fuel pump relay clicks 2 times after you turn the switch on. If the ECU is bad, not powering up or needs repair, then i would consider a new ECU. Its much less of a pain in the end. |
I know this is a thread from the dead, but I'm just adding my Vista success in case somebody stumbles upon this thread while searching. I'm using the Gigaware USB to Serial adaptor from Radio Shack to connect to an E6K. COM1 set in Haltech Program Setup. COM1 set in Device Manager and under Port Settings tab, change Bits per second to 19200. In Dosbox config file I used the serial1=directserial realport:COM1.
If it doesn't work initially, try restarting your computer. Also, make sure your key is on so your ECU is getting power. |
I'll throw in my experience as well.
I have a laptop my company gave me a few years ago that I barely use because it too has vista. The only use for it now is my car and my e6k. I bought this product due to hit or miss with the serial-->USB cable adapters. Newegg.com - SYBA SD-PCM15009 PCMCIA Cardbus to 2 x Serial Ports Adapter I've had zero issues with this. I plug it into the slot, let the computer detect it, then I run dosbox. Done and done. |
Im using a brand new lattitude E6520 with windows 7 x64
Simple solution is use Virtualbox and install XP. Staples carries a usb to serial that works perfect for between 20 and 30 bucks. this setup required no tweeking or dicking around to get it to work just simple straight forward installing the usb/serial adapter software, virtualbox and windows xp. |
i tried to do this on my hp with windows 7 and im totally lost .. can some one help please
|
I just did this with windows 7, I followed the right up and it worked.
