Fuel sensor?
 

Hello everyone,
A friend of a friend, who has a good reputation as far as tuning is concerned, is going to connect with me, remotely, to tune my Haltech Sprint. But first, he wants me to install a fuel sensor? I had no idea I needed this. I guess it monitors fuel pressure changes throughout the RPM range. Are any of you using this and how critical is it to have? Keep in mind the internals of my NA 13B are stock.

It's really common to have fuel supply problems on modified cars. Datalogging a pressure sensor in the ECU is a good way to identify when your pump (or wiring, or lines, or filter) isn't keeping up. I've got a standalone ECU plus a fuel pressure sensor installed on a mostly-stock FD engine, and my datalogs suggest the stock pump & wiring is barely enough for stock power levels.

If you could only buy a wideband O2 sensor or a fuel pressure sensor, I would go with a wideband O2 sensor first. You can infer a fuel pressure problem if your fuel map needs a lot of fuel added at high RPM where you know the engine isn't making more torque. If you need to choose between a fuel pressure sensor and EGT sensors, I might go with a fuel pressure sensor first.

Thanks for the reply. We just realized that the Sprint isn't capable of altering fuel pressures, etc. So it would only be able to show the pressure but unable to do anything with it. I still may get it anyway just to be able to see it. If anything, maybe at least a gauge.

Currently, I have the NGK AFX WBO2. Should be fine tuning tomorrow eve with the help of a tuning guru. Can't wait to see/feel the results.

The ECU generally doesn't change the fuel pressure. You'd have a vacuum/boost referenced pressure regulator for that. It's mostly important so a tuner can tell when they're about to blow up your car because of low fuel pressure. Your ECU can't change the oil pressure either, but it sure is nice to have a gauge, isn't it?

Adding to this conversation, should I mount a fuel pressor sensor off of the fuel pressure regulator port that is allocated for a gauge?

That's what I did, works great and helped me get to the bottom of my own fueling issues.

Are you talking about the the port on the main fuel rail where the stock FPR is?

I have a turbosmart FPR. Any affordable fuel pressure gauge that plays well with a Haltech?

couldn't you use any 5v pressure sensor and run it to the ecu?

that is kinda what Im thinking. yet it seems I see $20 units for sale the then the jump to $100 or more. at least from the start of my shopping recon.

The $20 sensors work but I would rather not risk an engine fire to save $80. I'm currently using a Honeywell MLH100PGB06A with E85 and it has worked fine for over two years.
