CDI boxes that works with a E6X?

After awesome results on pump (506 RWHP/553nm) on pump gas, im thinking about switching to E85 and see what more boost will do. Since im not really comfortable pushing the limits of my current ignition system any further, im thinking about getting CDI.

Has anyone tried the AEM Twin Fire unit? It seems cheap, considering it is a 4 channel rotary support unit, and pushes 189mj/540V. Strangely enough, they wont let you use Mercury Coils, for no apparent reason.. And i have read not especially great reviews on the old unit (CD2I or something)

The Autronic 500R seems good, but sadly, it doesnt like the signal that the E6X supplies.

Any other reasonable options?

M&W, MSD, Crane. Pick your flavor.

Stay away from the AEM unit. do a search they fail for everyone. People i know of first hand is it cost Chadwick an engine and left Garfinkle broke down on the Interstate. I was thinking of going the same way since the HKS twin power is just a hair better than stock but ask around and found this out.

Looks like AEM is out of the picture then.. I guess ill have to spring out for a 500R or a M&W.. This car is getting expensive :)

I went with the M&W, and I run a E6K with E85. Haven't got it wired up yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

The problem with rotaries and CDIs is this, if its not a twin capacitor box, it will probably not be able to handle the split duties associated with the rotary's ignition system

M&W Boxes are twin capacitor, so this is not a problem for them, but they are more pricy, with MSD boxes you need to use several, ie. 3 6A's, 2 DIS, etc., dont know of any Crane or Jacobs multi-channel box that can handle a rotary. Autronic's 500R is also twin capacitor and works with rotaries and Haltech, but its pricy and not very easy to get.

I wish someone built a rotary CDI that didnt cost more than 600-700 bucks.

My 2 cents.

Dynatek is working on a rotary CDI. If their other auto units are an indicator of price they should be priced very well.

One thing i also forgot to mention is that since the E6X can only do wasted spark, it is ideal to have a Sport 1000 or similar box to make the best of the individual outputs to maximize spark output at each location.

Ryan, will the Dynatek box be dual capacitor?

Not sure on the twin capacitor part they said they were beta testing and wouldn't give me much info. Said it would be out in about a month about a month ago :).

you CAN setup the E6X to run sequential. I've done it successfully.

Using that trick BDC came up with? With the 2 trailing coil packs? And i would presume, connect the CDI's after the igniters? Which CDI did you use? OR if this isnt how you did it, how did you do it?

Indian Sep 12, 2009 05:11 PM

I did it the exact way BDC said to do it and it worked. didnt set it up with a CDI , but if you can configure the ECU to run sequential, then all you have to do is wiring in the CDI accordingly.

Wasted spark works fine.

Get two Dynatek boxes with coils for the leading(trailing not really biggie). Crane hi-6 boxes also work excellent with lx92 coil pack but the dynatek is more powerful apparently.

On this note, i have to step in and mention the fact that the LS1 coils are indeed capable of 650+hp to the wheels, and the LS2/truck coils are even more powerful. So, in that case, if i were to do a 700HP motor, id go with LS2 coils. No need for CDI.

Indian Sep 15, 2009 03:32 PM

the coils might be good for 650+, but will it work without an amplifier? Unless you have these coils working and supporting 650+ hp without an amplifier, then I think this is speculation.

If it does support a full spark at that power range, then alot of us will be saving money by not buying any CDI systems. lol

700hp on race fuels dosnt really count.

LS1 coils cannot fire 1 litre of water per minute and 10:1 afrs. been their and done that.

On a pump fuel car i wouldnt use them over 500rwhp.
