AIM MXL + E11v2

I just bought an AIM MXL Pista and am running an E11v2 on my 20B.

The Racestudio software has an option for Haltech - E11v2 in it via RS232, and according to the AIM site, you can use the RS232 out from the E11 into the MXL and read that way. Everything I have been reading though suggests that you need to use the CAN protocol and set the ECU as "AIM" in the software rather than choosing Haltech E11v2.

I haven't wired it all up yet, but any advice would be appreciated before I get too far into it!

Set the Dash to accept the connection from an AIM ECU (dont set it to Haltech ECU) and connect it via the CAN. Should work perfectly.

Thanks Claudio. Does the RS232 Haltech support not work or something? Why does everyone use CAN instead?

Its faster and you can send bigger chunks of data.

Got it, thanks. I'll report back in a couple of weeks when it's up and running!

Just following up on this, it appears that if you use the RS232 Haltech mode, you get access to a whole host of information that isn't available via CAN. Specifically, Injection time, ignition advance, baro press, etc.

I think I'm going to try it via RS232 and if it doesn't work revert to CAN. I'd love to be able to log everything in one central place rather than needing both AIM and Haltech logs to get a complete picture!

Well, technically if you just connect the AIM to the Haltech its only seeing what the haltech is seeing, unless you put extra sensors on it its all the same, so i would just log with the Haltech, specially since its got internal datalogging capabilities, the Haltech i mean.

Right, I am adding Oil Press, Oil Temp, and Fuel Press via external sensors on the MXL harness. That way I *should* have a single source for datalogging everything going on with the car, and can add steering angle, suspension travel, etc etc to it in the future.

I think this is valuable as you can use it in conjuction with the track mapping feature to get a pretty good idea of what's happening to the car at various points on the track.

I was more curious as to whether or not the RS232 mode even works, as everyone I've seen with this setup uses CAN and I could never understand why!

Ah ok. I hear ya. Sounds like a plan. What i would then ask is if the RS232 is fast enough for your needs.

That's the question.

I guess we'll find out...what's the speed difference between CAN and RS232?

I'm planning on doing the exact same thing with my 20B P-Port (E11V2, Aim Dash, etc.) Just wondering one thing.....is there a difference between the AIM units and the Haltech badged units other than the price?
