SBG Street BBK - preview/interest thread

We've been working on this setup in the background for awhile now but have had enough requests (read "customer harassment") that we finally got off our bums and thought we'd see how many people are actually interested in bringing this prototype to the next level.... In typical SBG fashion, here's more information than you wanted to know... Lots of Useless Information / History:  As many of us know the stock brakes for the FD are actually quite good! If I recall correctly the FD nabbed the shortest stopping distance of all cars tested back in 1993! The stock brakes were manufactured by the OEM brake manufacturer Sumitomo. Unfortunately the stock rotors for the early cars are small (22mm thick!) and have little heat holding capacity and a poor cooling vane design... so while the first number of stops are just fine, subsequent stops eventually overheat the rotors and your brakes give up the ghost :icon_tdow . Fast forward to 1999 with the new RS and RZ cars the 280hp versions of the FD came with similar-but-different brakes. The rotors were widened from 22mm thick to 32mm thick, and the rotor diameter was changed from 294mm to 314mm. This change had three benefits:
The effect of the refined Sumitomo brake setup was a significantly greater resistance to overheating and a more responsive (torque-y) brake pedal. These brakes are known as the 99-spec or Spirit-R brakes. In the early 2000's Mazda began planning for the final version of the FD (the Spirit R). Mazdaspeed also began their own development of what they felt would be the pinnacle of tuned FD's (to follow up and trump the 15th Anniversary, A-spec, and GTC kits). The last Mazdaspeed to be released was called the R-Spec (racing spec). This was Mazdaspeed's last go at the FD, and they decided to pull out all of the stops and apply everything they had learned over the 10 year run of the FD. Attachment 662747 Ok enough history, tell me about the brakes please: As part of the R-spec package Mazdaspeed released a brake upgrade based around the 99-spec rotors (314x32mm). Naturally they chose a Sumitomo caliper, but this caliper (unlike the 99-spec) was a lightweight and ultra rigid one-piece caliper with big ol' pistons. This setup wasn't without compromise however. As Mazdaspeed was stuck with the stock front rotor, and the brake pads for the new caliper were slightly taller, they had a bit of pad overhang on the inside and outside of the rotor (about 1mm on inside and outside). Not a huge deal but without casting new front rotors they couldn't do much about it. The large front pistons also left some rear braking capacity on the table, but again they were stuck with the stock rear rotors. The new brake setup worked great as-is with stock and 99-spec rears, but because of their manufacturing limitations they couldn't squeeze every last drop of braking out of the FD. Attachment 662748 |

So here's the skinny... Attachment 662742 Front Brakes: Well, we got a set of these bad boys and reverse engineered the Mazdaspeed Brake setup! We've been able to source the modified Sumitomo monoblock calipers Mazdaspeed used in the kit, and have produced the appropriate CNC adapter brackets. For an affordable setup this kit can be used with stock 99-spec 1-piece OEM rotors :icon_tup: To take this setup further we have been working to rectify the pad overhang issue that Mazdaspeed released the setup with by engineering some custom rotors :noyes:. 'While we were in there' we thought it might be a good idea to add some directional curved vanes and extra lightness. Two-piece 315mmx32mm rotors (not pictured - still in development) will take these calipers to the next level of braking performance. **current setup picture with a single-piece straight vane 99-spec rotor Attachment 662743 Attachment 662744 Rear Brakes: Mazdaspeed designed these brakes to work effectively with both stock and 99-spec rear brakes. Despite their best efforts, there's still more braking left on the table that can be squeezed out of the rears. With small production runs of components (and the ability to use a two-piece rotor) we can provide a matched rear brake setup to work with the front kit for the ultimate street braking setup! The rear kit (nearing end of production) is the same setup used with our competition brake kit Competition Brake System - SakeBomb Garage . Again the rear kit is *NOT* needed for either our competition or this potential street kit setup, but is meant to provide further enhanced braking when used with either front setup. Please remember this is an INTEREST THREAD ONLY. This thread is meant for discussion, suggestions, questions, and to show your possible interest in seeing this produced. This has been a back-burner project for us, and we're very busy with a number of other FD parts at the moment. Please take this into consideration as the street brake kit is somewhat down on our priority list. With enough community backing it may happen however, and much of the design work is complete.
Please do not ask about specific pricing, the answer at this point is we simply "we do not know". The goal with this setup is to make a competitive street brake kit solution with reduced cost and maximum performance in mind. Obviously the cost will be lower than our AP competition kit, but how much lower depends on a number of factors including volume/interest, quantity of components we can source, etc. Thanks, Heath |
I would be very interested, but only with the option of a 2 piece lightweight front rotor.
|
I'm very interested as well. Please keep it moving. Sounds like the perfect kit for my intentions.
|
We're the ap matching rear kit!?? Not oem modified kit

Count me in for both fronts and rears.

Very interested...Be nice to be able to go down a "level" in pad and dual purpose the same pads for street and light track use and down a level is dust..lol I ran the AX6's on my 4000lb VR4 with ST ST40 calipers and had no fade with track use. i noticed i was losing my brakes just so going from 130-135 down to 70 on the back straight at Gateway after about 15 minutes on track. So i need a little more rotor to suck up that heat.

Oh and if for some reason I didn't mention it before, these front brakes will (believe it or not) fit beneath stock 16" wheels due to the curvature of the rotor! I was shocked they fit.
|
Interested as well, can't decide if I'm saving for the AP comp kit or this kit though.
Keep up the great work bringing awesome FD parts! If I could, I swear I'd buy every part y'all make - they just seem so well thought out with top notch production. |

With the following information our in-house track junky (Dan) should be able to make some brake and pad compound recommendations for you.

I just shelled out $700 for StopTech Rotors and Carbotech pads but I am guessing they will be toast by next Summer...after a few track days.
I am really interested in a proven cohesive package...that will decrease fade and provide consistent performance for HPDE~ers! |
One suggestion to keep prices down is to make a bracket that re-purposes the front calipers to the rear.
|
I have a bit to go before it's track ready, but ultimately, it will be mostly driven on the streets in a very spirited manner :)
My fear, is once bitten by the track bug, I'll be hooked, and hittin' up Brainerd Raceway too often for anything but the comp breaks. The tires will be Direzza ZII, on 17x9 wheels, 255 tires. Power is between 325-350 Suspension is still stock (like I said, would love to pick up a set of your DFVs) Breaks are still stock. Was thinking that I would go with Endless MX72 pads. Thanks! what's going to be the pad availability for these calipers? does it share pad shape with any other car? nice thing about a AP/Stoptech/Brembo caliper is huge selection of pads
|
After a lot of thought and how limited my track time is. I would be most interested in a kit that just allows the use of the 32mm thick rotors(basically what you currently have pictured). Should offer that as a budget setup for limited use track guys like me that just need that better rotor to allow the same pad for street/light track use.
Unless the 2pc rotors really arent that much more expensive than the OEM 1pc ones. Jason |
I'm interested!

Very impressive guys, this is a great option for those who don't have need of the full-blown Competition kit. I'm also really digging the rear option, as I'm pretty sure Racing Brake no longer offers their rear kit.
Nice work, I owe some yummy sour ales to the SBG guys  :icon_tup: |

You can use the 2 piece rotors that we are developing for this kit with 99 spec brake calipers. Your stock calipers can only be used with a 22mm rotor... they're better suited for miatas than high HP FD's

I won't be interested now, but in the future for sure
|
