Map Pocket Lid - quick/inexpensive/high quality
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...78a48775ff.jpg
A local shop built a replacement lid for my map pocket. Using my old lid, he built a template and created a brand new durable lid covered with a cushioned fabric. It makes a very comfy arm rest and makes my map pocket functional again. The lid itself fits snug and you pop it on and off. It is not hinged to flip open because my map pocket hinge inserts were pretty damaged. He says, he can build a simple hinge system to allow it to flip open vs pop out. Questions for the forum: 1. Would you be interested in the simple pop out arm rest version (price point I think would be $60-70)? 2. Would you be interested in a hinged version, which would require some simple installation ($80-100)? If there is enough interest, I will see if he would bulk produce? |
Im definitely interested... couple of questions.
- Would the hinged version keep the original mounting points? - Is there an option of customization of the fabric (for a cost of course)? |

These points are a source of many of the failed map pockets. It would likely mount on the inside edge of the pocket. - he can do it in any color or fabric. |

I'm definitely interested in a hinged version.
but what's going on with the "underneath" side? The big block that looks like its screw on... is that a weight... or reinforcment... or what am I looking at? I know that's the part you rarely see... but it looks a little DIY (with that said... I still want one) |

The block does add some good weight to it, but it mainly creates the snug fit. This was just his prototype. I'm sure if he gets enough interest and builds this out for retail, it will be much more of a finished look. This guy does awesome custom work. Take a look at the amp/speaker platform he created for my rear compartment. (PLEASE DO NOT COPY MY CUSTOM AMP/SPEAKER DESIGN! I would like to keep it unique to my car, but feel free to use it for ideas.)

Well keep me posted. My lid just sits loose (hinges gone) so I like the idea of a bolt-on hing option. I'm tired of accidentally sitting on my map lid cuz it just sits there loose.
plus... having it padded would be niiiiiice! |
I'll take one anyway possible, padded perferred. I don't care if I have access to the space or not, I just don't want my lid popping off.

Does your shop want to make a prototype 2.0 with hinge for me? Gotta start with 1!

Cool. Keep us (me) posted!

*sniff* I guess this plan died?
|
He seems to have gotten busy on other projects. I will let you know if he comes back to the project.

Plan died?? Update

It lost momentum. You may want to try and reach out the shop that did it and ask for Charles. He might be willing to take an order or two. https://firstcoastautocreations.com/contact/
