I did it this weekend out of curiosity and for a future writeup. You just have to pop the interior trim panel that's behind the outer door handle, remove the 2 10mm nuts, lean the door handle out and disconnect the 2 rods, then remove the lock cylinder. My 5-digit code was stamped on the side of the cylinder itself.

Dale

Just did this and its just SO easy. The only issue that can be daunting is to get the interior corner trim off, the rest is ease.
I removed the two nuts, then tilted the handle out, then removed the spring holding the cylinder in place, and then i could move it out and twist it enough to get a view of the code.
And this 5-digit code is all they need right?

Glad that helped! Yep, that is the main key code for the car, a good locksmith should be able to use that to cut you a new key.

I would definitely have them cut a plain cheap key first to verify that it works and you've got the right code (and that someone hasn't messed with the locks and that code isn't valid!) before cutting the expensive keys. Make sure it works everywhere - hatch, doors, ignition.

Yeah! It's really one of the *easier* things to remove in the car.

As for Dale's advice - I can't agree more. Having a cheap blank cut first, THEN cutting your Spirit-R/Titanium key is a no brainier.

HEY GUYS!

Good news! The titanium keys are here (yaaaay!)... but the Spirit-R don't ship until Monday (boooo!). The titanium keys need some final finishing (sandblasting) so it's not that bad of a hold up.

That said, I'll probably wait until everything is in hand to start launching these out. But I can say, I had one cut and it fit / works perfectly. I'm really stoked with how it turned out and I'm sure you'll be happy as well! https://www.rx7club.com/images/smilies/icon_tup.gif

A quick note on cutting. Even if everything goes perfectly with your locksmith, you may still need to deburr or even file down left over metal. Take your time and do it right. At this point, the titanium that needs to be cleaned up should be thin enough to do things by hand. Wire wheels, small files and patience are your friend. My key came out of the key cutter with some 'folded' titanium that didn't quite release - a little filing to clean everything up made it perfect.

If you are on the fence, NOW is the time to order. Promotional prices and FREE carbon fiber key chains expire next week. Tell a friend! Tell a NA Miata owner! Tag us on social media! Do whatever it is the kids do now-a-days! :celebrate

Spirit-R keys are EN ROUTE! I got tracking info on them and I should have them in hand this week or veeeeeery early next week. I've stocked up on shipping supplies and should start launching orders as soon as they touch down.

I know the feeling! When you do - the Spirit-R keys are straight forward... but pay attention to the tips on our website regarding the titanium!

Dale Clark also had some good tips earlier in the thread. :icon_tup:

Why the tip difference between the Spirit-R key and the Titanium?

Nothing really. The Spirit-R key was made with an existing mold for the key body. The titanium was a 1:1 scan from an OEM 93-95 key.

Both work. Good eye. :icon_tup:
