GB: SakeBomb Garage - Forged RZ+ Wheels (17x9.5 +45)

SakeBomb Garage is proud to introduce our re-worked variant of the ultra-rare RZ wheel, featured only on the Special Edition 2001 RZ. To our knowledge, only 250 of this Special Edition RZ's were produced (fewer produced than even the Spirit R!).

We chose to start with the limited edition RZ wheel as a basis for our race-designed wheel due to the inherent strength characteristics of the design, as well period correct aesthetics. Being one of our favorite wheel designs here at the shop, we started with an original RZ BBS wheel from Japan to 3D scan, then optimize in CAD for increased strength and reduced weight due to the inherent strength benefits of a forged wheel (Stronger and Lighter!). We designed the spoke architecture from the ground up to be compatible with both all of our track-ready brake kits (AP Competition kit and Wilwood Track Day kit), with a wheel that is durable enough for harshest track use. We then increased width to 9.5 inches (+45) for a 255 square tire setup, and added knurled bead seats for track use! The end result we named the RZ+ !

Wheel Specs:
  • 17x9.5 +45 5x114.3
  • Estimated weight: 17.86 lbs, 8.1kg
  • Hubcentric @ 67.1mm for a direct fit on the FD (no hubcentric rings required)
  • Load Rated and strength optimized specifically for the FD
  • Knurled Bead Seat to prevent tire slippage under hard braking and acceleration
  • Optional Forged RZ+ Centercap
  • Designed to seamlessly fit all 17" compatible SBG BBK's! (Wilwood and AP) - no guesswork or fitment templates required!
  • Gunmetal or HyperSilver Colors - centercaps color matched

ETA for first batch to ship - estimated late June! Limited quantity available. Payment in full via pre-order will be required to hold your spot. Very limited spaces available.

Wow now that is next level!!

I have never had much luck scanning with handheld scanners (not attached to an articulating arm) what tool is that and what software are you guys running if you don't mind? I love all these new products. I am going to have to start selling a lot more gas pedals...

Keep up the great work!
Matt

Good god, where was this last year?

Truly awesome work

Ruler_Mark 04-28-19 11:29 AM

What company is doing the manufacturing? Will these carry any certifications?

HiWire 04-28-19 11:39 AM

Beautiful work. Is the gunmetal finish the same color as on the original RZ wheels?

As close as possible yes :)

Little known fact (and even less made than the Gunmetal RZ wheel...) there was a silver version offered in 2001 *only* as an upgrade for RS FD's wheels during purchase. We're doing our best to replicate the even-less-common silver wheel finish as well :)

We're contractually obligated to keep the design/manufacturing company private, but suffice to say they are a VERY PROMINENT forged wheel manufacturer, manufacturing proven track wheels. No cost to quality / engineering / machining was spared here ;)

These wheels were designed from the ground up, using FEA analysis to ensure structural integrity for race use with load ratings specifically for the FD RX7. These wheels are being manufactured to DOT / SAE and JWL / VIA standards, as well as being submitted for impact testing, and drum force durability testing. With the manufacturer we are working with, we're in VERY good hands. We would not stand behind this wheel with any less confidence in the state of the art engineering and manufacturing processes being used!

Very cool idea, if I didn't have SR rims I'd be down for a set. Are there any options for a shadow chrome type of finish?

There were 325 late RZ's with the gun metal finish. Very hard to put a number on the optional RS wheels as it was not recorded with the VIN's.

HiWire 04-29-19 09:51 AM

I did a little research on the Special Edition RZ – were they a 2000 model year car? I think they were produced from October 2000, which is almost heading into the 2001 model year (I think the Japanese record model years differently).

These are SO awesome. One of my favorite wheels for stock bodied cars BY FAR!

Narfle 04-29-19 05:37 PM

Recommended to roll fenders with this setup, or will these clear with just an alignment? Cool stuff.

They made 175 in 2000 and 150 in 2001 :icon_tup:.

I think you're alright with the width and the offset. The offset is what throws everyone off whenever they get wheels. Apparently it's cool to have the rubber sit exactly aligned with the metal border around the wheel well. They completely forget the fact the vehicle needs to be used. So you go over a bump or you want to apply full steering lock, and you blow up the fenders.
A 45+ offset is well within range of the stock fenders.

9.5inch width running 255 rubber on the other hand... that's a bit stretched.

Sakebomb is fantastic for bringing around great products for our vehicle!

FourtyOunce 04-30-19 08:49 AM

Great work SBG. Is there any chance you would consider doing a 17x10 or 17x10.5?

Varies depending on the tire. Some of the UHP Summers are under 9" tread width while others are closer to 9.5". It can also be argued that a small stretch is beneficial.

Mazderati 04-30-19 09:16 AM

What is the country of origin? Warranty?

fendamonky 04-30-19 09:38 AM

Hmm, I'm definitely interested in this! When does the group buy close? I'll be dragging my car to a shop in Cali around June timeframe so I need to save my pennies for that bill right now.. I may be able to work these into that build though.

_Ravi__ 04-30-19 10:08 AM

Quick question. Without the optional colored center caps, it comes with none I imagine?
