GB: SakeBomb Garage - Feather-Light 880 CCA Lithium Ion Re-Start Battery + Mount

https://pop1.screenpopper.com/upload...teroutline.png

As many of you know, we've been working with the design team at AntiGravity Batteries to put together the ultimate package for a super high cranking amp (880 CCA!!!) battery for the FD and other platforms we support. The goal was an Ultra Lightweight (~5lbs) battery, with massive cranking amps, and ample reserve capacity (30AH)... WITH auto shutdown / restart technology. The ATX30 ended up as the perfect balance, and the super light weight battery allowed us to design our own battery mount that is versatile enough to mount in various locations around the FD (as well as custom applications with our mount system).

https://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/server5...0.1280.jpg?c=2

https://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/server5...0.1280.jpg?c=2

https://oi723.photobucket.com/albums...g?t=1556916543

Assuming there is enough interest, we will be putting together a few mounting location options that are plug and play with our mount as well as include all of the required wiring, grommets, pre-made and ready to drop in the car. Relocation kits are great for v-mount setups, cleaning up the engine bay, reducing dead weight from the chassis by removing a lead acid battery, etc.

Before we roll out the final details we would like to see what mounting/placement locations people are interested in and put together our kits accordingly. Pricing for the kits is currently TBD, and will depend on the materials needed to create each kit (for instance, trunk mount kits will be more expensive due to the additional cable requirements (thicker gauge and longer runs).

The new AntiGravity battery technology is absolutely amazing... faster cranking times with double to triple the cranking amps as a lead acid battery, small footprint like the tiny braile style batteries currently used to save weight and space, super light (5lbs) allowing the flexibility to mount in various locations without paying a weight penalty (for instance you can mount in the less used driver bin - and not the passenger bin - as you do not need to worry about weight offsets any longer), and you'll never need to worry about jump-starting your car again with the re-start technology - while also protecting the Lithium-Ion battery to prevent battery degradation. Win win win!

All battery mounting kits will include:
  • ATX30 Battery
  • SakeBomb Garage Billet Mounting Bracket Kit
  • Direct Fit Mounting Bracket Adapters
  • All Required Pre-Crimped Cabling, Grommets, Hardware, etc.

We are considering 3 kits:

  • Bin Mount (driver Bin)
  • Trunk Mount (left or right side - please vote)
  • Engine Bay (battery replacement)

For those wanting to make their own kit, or not wait for the GB, we are well stocked on our SBG-Designed Billet Battery Mounts, and ATX 30 batteries.

Regarding an engine bay mount, the TurboJeff setup is really nice, except the battery is too far outward in the engine bay and doesn't provide enough room for the terminal and fuses. If there were some setup that addressed that, I'd be interested. I think a really well planned and documented trunk mount kit would do well too. Grommets, pre cut cables, drill locations, classy cable routing. There's too much research and guesswork leading to sub par installs. Not a big fan of putting one in the bin. Aside from losing cool storage space, the bin's weren't conceived to handle that load in an crash scenario. But, that's me. You do you.

Agreed... BUT... the rules of engagement have now changed. 5lbs is SO light... our billet mount in retrospect is over-engineered. When we got these in for testing originally I thought we were sent an empty plastic "display" unit... nope... full battery. You could mount this thing on the roof if you wanted, it's crazy. Hard to explain until you hold one but these batteries are insane (and double the cranking amps of a standard battery!).

cloud9 05-05-19 11:35 AM

The battery is coincidentally an area of my build I haven't finalized yet so I'm definitely interested. I've got the greddy v-mount so I have to figure something out. My highest desire would be trunk, if the kit is comprehensive enough. Something similar to the setup eric (grand mighty) made, with a custom mounting bracket placed within the spare tire well, would be spectacular. Especially if it could still be covered. If the trunk kit is something along those lines, I'm in. With that said I'm not married to a particular solution so I'm very interested to hear details on the other options you're ideating on. The only think I know I won't do is cut up the bins to accommodate a battery.

That makes two of us!

A trunk kit in the spare tire well would be a very good option for me. If it could fit without sticking up over the edge it could be incorporated into those spare wheel tool box setups from feed and the like.
1 - Would you be able to ship this international?
2 - The dimensions are 165mm, 175mm and 127mm if i am correct?

As for pricing, AntiGravity has a mount for $179 and the battery itself is $399, so i dont think this be a budget option. But then again, Sakebomb is not in the budget business either so ;)

oppa637 05-05-19 06:59 PM

I"d like to relocated mine where abs is. Otherwise I'd consider bin or trunk.

The total kit will be an affordable kit that is priced competitively with all the parts you need :) Just listing the standard parts if anyone wants battery only or mount only, or doesn't feel like waiting. :)

Adding. Bin and trunk mounts will need provision to mount direct to the body (e.g. rivnut). It may be 5-6 lb, but 5-6 lb can still do some damage (and there's also the tech guys to worry about)

Yeah,i was not bashing the price at all, or suggested that it was unreasonably priced.
I was just posting them in the thread in case people did no know how much it was from the supplier. The kit will no doubt be of the same quality (and thus price range) as everything else you sell. You get premium, and that will no doubt cost premium, and will be worth it :D

TwinCharged RX7 05-07-19 01:39 AM

I think passenger bin is needed. It's not used just as a weight offset, i use my driver bin frequently for premix and other things I need often. Passenger bin keeps the battery out of the way.

Akomix 05-07-19 06:01 PM

Agree with this.

Definitely interested if passenger bin is an option.

Brekyrself 05-13-19 01:51 PM

If we can use existing mounts in the trunk without drilling new holes into panels or the body that would be perfect. Otherwise Engine Bay it is.

I have been using this battery on a stock compression LS3. So far so good. However I caution you not to rely to heavily on the Re-start feature. My first one died because I left my HP tuners programming cable plugged in for a week. Re-start didn't work, and AG ended up replacing it under warranty (whew!).

We're finishing up the trunk mount to start first, and working on seeing if we can make it compatible with the Greddy V-Mount.

For the bin setup we are waiting on our 3D scanner to come back from repair, but it will be a single piece billet configuration requiring minimal modifications to retain as much of the stock bin integrity as possible (hopefully just one hole max ;) Stay tuned, that version n the works!!

All SBG battery kits will come with:
  • PnP Battery Mount
  • AntiGravity Restart Battery
  • All Required Mounting Brackets
  • All Battery Cabling Required - Pre-Crimped (positive, negative, and fuse)
  • 120A+ Fuse Block / Disconnect

The goal here is a fully plug and play battery kits, in a few variants!

Hey Guys!

We appreciate the interest! We've narrowed this down to the passenger side trunk location for a number of different reasons. This includes the least amount of modifications, strongest pick up point locations and shortest and most direct run to the engine bay for the power cable. Plus the weight of the battery weighs less to nothing, thus it's location isn't a huge factor in placement due to the new lithium Ion technology.

Wheels are in motion getting the final adjustments, overall this mount is coming out great!

Wompa164 10-28-19 11:18 AM

Will this mount in the same location as your fire extinguisher kit?

IamRobbyah 12-20-19 11:49 AM

Hate to back out like this, but I went ahead and bought the bracket itself and will be doing the wiring myself. I haven't seen much movement on the GB and I'd like to get moving with the project.

Thanks for making such quality products SBG!

David Hayes 02-05-20 01:09 PM

Just quick note on the use of an alternative battery for this kit, the Antigravity ATX-30 HD:

https://antigravitybatteries.com/pro...-oem/atx30-hd/

The HD is a heavy-duty version of the ATX-30 proposed for this kit. While the HD weighs a bit more than the standard ATX-30 (7.81 versus 5.75 lbs.), it shares the same case footprint (6.5 x 5 x 6.8 inches (LxWxH), has more power (970 versus 880 CCA), and more reserve Amp-hours (48 versus 32).

Why consider the HD over the standard ATX-30? The standard ATX-30's RESTART technology serves as a power cutoff for the battery, using an algorithm to continuously monitor the health and voltage of the battery. When the battery sees a continuous drop in voltage, it will automatically shut off the battery somewhere between 12.45 - 12.70 volts, sending it to a zero voltage condition as a failsafe. While the RESTART feature ensures your battery will have enough power to subsequently start your car, the RESTART feature essentially renders your battery unusable when it triggers the RESTART function.

I know this as I ordered a regular ATX-30 and recently installed it in my car. I assumed the battery would come fully charged, but Antigravity tells me that all lithium batteries drop to a stable, lower voltage level around 13.1 volts. So, my battery arrived with a little under 13 volts, and when I keyed the ignition on the car to calibrate my SpeedHut gauges, the battery triggered the RESTART function, sending the battery to zero volts and shutting down the car. While this was just an inconvenience as I wasn't driving at the time, the RESTART feature shut down could become an issue when driving.

I called Antigravity and the techs explained to me that the more appropriate battery for an FD, particularly one that has been modified, is the HD version, which does not include the RESTART function - it does include a nifty battery capacity indicator. The HD allows for deeper discharge cycles of the battery without the fear of the battery triggering an auto cut off function. Per the techs, the regular ATX-30 is intended for motorcycle use, although they have seen the battery successfully used on cars with small 4 cylinder engines. On the other hand, they state the HD version of the ATX-30 is intended for use on modified performance autos and has been successfully used on cars such as Corvettes and the FD.

So, my regular ATX-30 is on its way back to Antigravity for an upgrade to the HD version. I offer this info as maybe SakeBomb may want to offer both versions of the battery for purchase.

After having to replace 2 lithium ions in other cars costing me 1k+ the low voltage cutoff is well worth it.

David Hayes 02-27-20 12:46 PM

^ Yes, I would agree - IF the battery was designed for a car. It is not. Note you can find the battery under "Motorcycles" - https://antigravitybatteries.com/pro...s/restart-oem/

So, the ATX30 is a motorcycle use intended battery and its RE-START feature uses algorithms for the battery that are programmed to monitor and control motorcycle levels of voltage and draws. This is why the RE-START feature activates at a much higher voltage level (12.45 - 12.8) than what would be intended for a car. Because the battery's RE-START feature was not intended for car use, especially in cars like ours, it can have adverse effects under operating conditions for any device that draws directly from the car battery. For example, think that second fuel pump you have wired to the battery or maybe your aftermarket ECU. When the second fuel pump activates, on most of our cars it will draw directly from the battery and most likely trigger the RE-START feature. That can have significant adverse results as the battery provides ZERO power when the RE-START feature is triggered. You have to press the RE-START button on the top of the battery to reset the battery to normal operation.

So, why then does the ATX30 HD work on the RX7? While it too is a motorcycle battery, it was developed for use on Harley V-Twins that need much higher voltage and AMP draws. Thus, the ATX30 HD is a better fit, as it draws much deeper than the ATX30 while allowing your components connected to the battery to properly operate.

But don't believe me, call Antigravity directly and ask them. They will tell you that they have had numerous reports of problems with cars attempting to use the regular ATX30, in contrast to much success with the ATX30 HD on cars like ours, Supras, and high-performance V8s. This is why I swapped out my ATX30 for the HD version and it's working like a champ for me.

Lastly, if you really want to keep the RE-START function, but on a battery designed specifically for automobiles, check out the Antigravity Group-51R Car Battery:

https://antigravitybatteries.com/pro...ive/ag-51r-rs/

It comes with a RE-START function that was developed for automobiles and also offers a cool Battery Management System (BMS). It does though cost more ($660) and weighs 8.5 lbs. versus 7.6 for the ATX30 HD. Both the ATX HD and the 51R would be good choices IMO.

Hope this helps. Just want to let you all know about the potential issues so you can make an informed decision. Kudos to SakeBomb for putting together a lithium battery kit for RX7.

We specifically would not recommend a non-restart / auto-cutoff version of ANY lithium-ion battery. This is because dropping below 10-11v on a li-ion battery can cause a dangerous state if the recharge rate is unregulated... breaching the internal walls of the cells when recharging the battery from a state under 10-11v (as jumping it and letting the cars alternator charge the battery for instance). After a few cycles of this you can create an issue with internal cell damage... we've had cars here at the shop meltdown and nearly catch fire after they've been recharged incorrectly.

As a result, we will ONLY use the Restart batteries on any cars here in our shop or sell anything other than re-start batteries. We specifically DO NOT recommend any lithium batteries (antigravity or other brands) that does not have the restart feature that disconnects the battery at 12.5v to prevent it from being pulled down below a safe level.

cloud9 05-28-20 04:41 PM

The reasons listed above contributed to my decision to install a solid state battery isolator along with my ATX-30 HD. The regular ATX-30 with restart just didn't offer enough juice for my application/comfort level (and Antigravity agreed). The HD version delivers in this regard and with the battery isolator, along with the other protections it provides, I can put the battery in standby mode (.001A draw) at anytime.

From a liability standpoint though I can appreciate SB's policy.

^ While I appreciate the update from SB, the information is not correct concerning Antigravity. Most of Antigravity's batteries, including the ATX-30 HD, have an integrated battery management system (BMS) built-in. The purpose of this system is to prevent exactly what is referenced by SB. So, the ATX-30 HD and most of the other Antigravity batteries are protected against an improper discharge and charge situation like the one referenced by SB. But don't take it from me, call Antigravity directly and they will confirm.

So, if one is going to use a battery not designed for automotive applications, the recommended battery for the FD is the ATX-30 HD, not the regular ATX-30. It contains the above referenced BMS to protect against unregulated recharge problems and also avoids the issues caused by the regular ATX-30 restart, motorcycle designed feature. Again, this technology is not designed or calibrated for use in a car and in particular, a modified FD.

I think we can all agree that the best battery for use would be any of the ones designed by Antigravity for automotive use such as the 51-R. All of the automotive series have the restart technology favored by SB but are specifically calibrated for automotive use. These batteries are also very light - I think the 51-R is around 8.5 lbs. - so you get the best of all worlds.
