i could make the LED inserts but i figured most people wouldn't want to do all the hassle of stud repairs, baking the S5 housings and prying them open and cleaning the sealant or cutting the S4 lenses apart to be able to do the modification.

it honestly would save me from alot of headache though because all of that is VERY time consuming for the amount i originally asked for this modification. hindsight, the few sets i did make i hope those who purchased them do like them. in the future though it won't be quite as cheap or i may do as you said and just make the inserts for those who want to do it on their own.

to those who were curious about why i used that type of LED stripping, the side or frontal aimed LEDs have very poor light emissions and generally had a much more purple tint to them, these were the brightest and closely spaced that i could find with a narrowness that would fit inside the tight confines that are required.

RotaryEvolution 06-21-11 03:54 PM

when i do make more i think the new direction will be amber LEDs with 2 independent relays so that they will replace the front markers.

i have already finished the ambers for my car but have yet to finish wiring them up to work as turn signals. i don't really drive my car much so will get some reference pictures whenever i can, of course at this point it would be more of a tease than anything though so i figured there was no rush.

i think the amber lights will be more popular anyways but will still offer both colors.

blk87Turbo2 06-21-11 09:33 PM

An even more complicated and cool setup would be to have the white leds turn off and the yellow leds blink when the turn signal is applied, then the white come back on after the turnsignal goes off, just like the Audis.

it wouldn't actually be that difficult but yet more wiring and trying to find a dual color LED that can fit in a very confined quarters would be the most difficult part. i did see some that had that effect but the spacing alternated between white and amber LEDs so they were half spaced and i didn't really like how it looked(granted i didn't actually try putting them in the housings to see how they really looked).

of course i could make the LED units personally for the required spacing and color combo but then it would require yet even more time so the cost would be more than the ~$200 i am expecting for the amber turn/marker set.

RotaryEvolution 06-25-11 02:57 AM

drove my car into work today so took some pics of da amberlamps...

used various camera settings as it can be difficult to gauge LED light output. most accurate would probably be #2.

iani1.1 06-25-11 03:04 AM

wow that amber looks alot better

blk87Turbo2 06-25-11 03:45 AM

Wish we could see similar pics of the white ones...all we got to see were the daylight pic.

RotaryEvolution 06-25-11 09:20 AM

if i have time i'll try to get a picture of the last set of white ones i'm working on before i ship them out.

blk87Turbo2 06-25-11 09:27 AM

Thanks Karack :)

iamxeddiex 08-05-11 07:49 PM

Wow, I had that idea but amber... Do the original parking lights!

brian_skotch 08-10-11 08:41 PM

I am very interested with that 100 price tag. I was gonna do it myself but this seems convenient. white leds of course!

BurntOrangeT2 10-18-11 12:06 AM

Need these asap

NJGreenBudd 10-19-11 03:26 PM

Hey just wondering if you had any update on these. Very cool idea and looks well executed.

HOZZMANRX7 10-19-11 06:27 PM

Sent you a PM.

RotaryEvolution 10-28-11 04:56 PM

as of now i still have cut off production of the modified FTP lenses until further notice(when things slow down enough to where i can start making them again). they realistically hardly paid the electric bill for the shop at the $100 price i was charging also so next runs will be priced higher.

i also have an S5 tail lamp waiting dissection for LED modification process/technique to be developed so hopefully those will be coming soon as well.

zhins50 11-08-11 01:15 PM

a buddy made some led s5 tails a couple years back, looked amazing. Time for your next project to get under way :P

Bamato 01-13-12 09:50 AM

Wow.. the amber ones look much better on our 80's cars than the white ones. Nicely done Ben.

D2380 01-15-12 09:24 PM

Looks really nice any night pics on the white led...

Funkspectrum 01-16-12 06:52 PM

I wouldn't mind a set of those.

JDP6693 01-25-12 10:27 AM

Yeah, I'd definitely be interested in a set of those. My poor original ones are about to bite the dust.

vl4bad 02-01-12 12:03 AM

NICE! when i get my car i will be looking forward to doing this mod.

Selonari 02-10-12 08:47 AM

Interested in these and the taillights ;)

D2380 02-11-12 01:44 PM

Hi any updates on the tail lights...

88evolFC3S 02-29-12 03:22 PM

Great Diy i must say.. i love these types of little mods...

BurntOrangeT2 06-11-12 05:54 PM

Bump

sharingan 19 06-14-12 11:28 AM

I just realized I hadn't gotten these back yet and the car is going to paint soon. I will check paypal to make sure I actually sent the money....

RotaryEvolution 06-14-12 03:55 PM

i remember you did and it's still on my to do list. if you can resend me your shipping information i will have yourse sent out first. i have 3 sets i am doing so have been trying to do all phases at the same time. sorry for taking so long.

sharingan 19 06-14-12 06:27 PM

No problem, it would have looked odd having a nice looking part on my car in its current state anyway, lol. But soon all will be right in the world.

PM sent.

BurntOrangeT2 06-14-12 11:25 PM

Definitely excited for these too. Thanks for all ur hard work Ben.

sharingan 19 07-06-12 12:15 PM

Car should be out of paint next week, can't wait to see it with these installed!

D2380 07-07-12 11:17 AM

Hello am update on rear taillight mods,,

RotaryEvolution 07-18-12 06:10 PM

finally got a break to set aside some time to work on the 4 sets i have to do. finished the LED strips, made a template for the diffusers(to make any future assemblies easier to fabricate), have the lenses all polished and working now on finishing up the diffuser/LED assemblies to be installed.

should be all done this weekend with the sets for those who i accepted before halting production so long ago.

BurntOrangeT2 07-18-12 10:51 PM

Hells to the yeah

RotaryEvolution 07-19-12 04:51 PM

here is one with a smoked tint done for Hozz, not sure if i totally like it as i was never a fan of smoked lights but i worked out the issues in getting this done after a few hours spent reversing the process, as the original process was causing the tint to crack and the clear coat to clump up.

https://img825.imageshack.us/img825/...cture017ns.jpg

it is almost completely blacked out when mounted to the car. in hindsight it probably would have been better to tint the inside but all previous coatings were done on the outside and the assemblies were already done.

junito1 07-19-12 05:06 PM

When my car gets going. and its actually being seen by others.. Ill send mine in! MIne already have studs in bad repaired=D with plastic weld gun thingy

sharingan 19 07-25-12 12:39 PM

I've been mean mugging the UPS guy every time he drives by my house and doesn't stop to drop these off.

they're on their way, should be there in a few days. will be USPS though since there is no UPS store nearby to do dropoffs.

the process will be available when business is slow enough to accept it. i can't tell you how much i loathe doing these after only doing a few sets, lol. the amber ones will also require S5 FTPs with removable cover, the S4 after cutting apart leaves too little room for the width of the LED and casings, even with the S5 i have to trim the inside of the housing and shoehorn it in there.

so i suppose anyone who wants in can start a waiting list, will be at least a few months before i may have time. the new price of $180 will apply to any color but ambers currently will require S5 housings and i do not have any spare S5 housings left.

Lol, guess I should apologize then. Only thing is the UPS truck is loud, so I can hear him coming down the street, and mean mug on the way back out. USPS on the other hand does on foot ninja deliveries on my street so no opportunities to mean mug

Any progress on the LED tails?

not yet, busy time now so maybe once summer is over i may have some free time for projects. tails might be a little easier to work with, a bit more room in there.

danegerous 12-28-12 11:51 PM

How powerful of a light could you fit in that spot? Not necessarily in the FTP lens but that opening in the bumper? My intercooler piping took place of the headlight assembly and I would like to be able to see the track at a night. Been looking at different offroad LED options but it's hard to gauge what would be effective.

RotaryEvolution 01-30-13 07:12 PM

if it's solo drift there are plenty of halogen units that spread tons of light that are very compact. i wouldn't use them for street or tandem use though, you will be blinding people. i am referring to offroad lights.

You can squeeze an hid projector in there.

RockLobster 07-02-13 09:05 AM

The new enduro and off-road LED light bars throw a TON of light. I see guys using them for Enduro racing a lot around here.

RockLobster 07-02-13 09:08 AM

There has to be a way to get something like this manufactured....i realize you probably have to order hundreds at a time...so it does not make much sense...

unfortunately yes, but on the upside the LED strips have been getting more compact and easier to squeeze into the housings. the main issue was the S4 housings require trimming to get them to fit inside the black plastic housing otherwise they interfere with the lens. the S5's didn't require much trimming if any at all and could be disassembled without cutting and regluing the lens to the assembly.

so i may do some more in the future but the requirement would have to be limited to S5 FTP housings. the series 4 units made the work almost not cost effective.

small projectors could also be mounted inside the back lense.

atli126 08-28-13 11:13 PM

what options are there for the hid projectors in the rear of the ftp? I already have hid headlights and will be retrofitting the fogs for the h3 hids

2nd Chance 02-10-14 10:29 PM

Bump for curiosity

ChubbKnight 02-25-14 11:55 PM
