modded FC3S LED FTPs

a little while ago with inspiration from various other OEM manufactured vehicles to date and some of the FD3S LED turn signal/headlight mods i looked around for various LEDs that i could use for the purpose of modifying the FC FTP lenses for a more up to date look. i found some LED strips that seemed to look about right but now thinking they may be a bit too flashy, here they are for feedback.

here they are mounted to the FTP assembly for a an off the car pictures of the color
https://img829.imageshack.us/img829/249/dsc00157ai.jpg

i decided to throw it on a customer's car who has missing FTPs for an on the car view
https://img808.imageshack.us/img808/2651/dsc00158f.jpg

and now with the headlights on for reference to what they would look like while driving
https://img407.imageshack.us/img407/5736/dsc00159n.jpg

i just started with the one to see how the final result would look, not too bad but a little flashy and may get the wrong attention(since they're pretty ultra blue i think cops probably won't like it much) however they may fit with my car better than this example since i have blue xenon HIDs. i'm going to look for some that are a little less striking in color, for now this is what i had in mind though.

with the current materials i can do angry(pictured, i made the initial set for my car since it is a prototype and they look fitting), sad(inverted angry), a full underline sweeping up the side or overline(don't prefer overline since the FTPs are partly shrouded on top side). depending on the final materials i was thinking i can mod them for about $85 a pair including lens polishing and stud repairs(if you still have the studs) or $100 if i can find enough FTPs to provide them on my own without cores. also going to see how many FCs i can cut harnesses on to make them plug and play units for about an additional $15 or so.

anyways, let me know what you guys think.

Not a big fan of that style LED also the angle isnt great., Also the rear of the FTP distorts the LED light source... The dude with the widebody vert had an amazing set on his...

Lets talk about that transmission in the background.. Is it powdercoated?? Looks amazing.

lol no, it's just high temp engine paint after i thoroughly cleaned it and rebuilt it though.

thanks for the feedback, if you run across the thread or a picture for reference it may help me get other ideas. the glossy black interior finish of the FTPs does make it difficult to not get a bit of reflection off the surface.

What did you use to clean/degrease?

carb cleaner and a wire brush.

thanks for the picture, that really does look a bit better with them placed in the actual FTP housing, i can disassemble the housing with some effort and do something similar to get rid of the reflectiveness of the glossy internals. i just need to find some LEDs with similar lighting levels versus the very blue ones i came across and the figure out a way to mount them evenly to the inside.

know who's car it is so i can ask about which LED he opted for in his modification? those almost match the blue xenons perfectly for an accent.

It is JuiceH.

I have bought some of similar whiteness, they come in a "strip" with double sided tape on the back. You can cut as many or few as you want off the row. Got them off ebay but this was a few years ago.

Something like this...

RotaryEvolution 01-09-11 08:08 PM

ah ok, i found some similar that come in strips for a more forward aim in direction that i may try. the white color was more what i was looking for since blue in LED translates into a very bright blue, too bright. maybe i'll try both and see which looks better diffused.

edit: looks like the lens will have to be cut off the housing since it is plastic welded on to disassemble the housings, not impossible to do as it should take about as much effort as it took to mount the current style LEDs to the rear glass.

Cant wait to see them done.

i was thinking of doing some this same thing with these LED Lights the third item down. but i was concerned that the color, a blueish white, might be to far off from the head lights and look odd.

In this ares, you cannot use any "blue" colored lights as they refer to emergency vehicles.
I would be up to Clear Lights though.

trying to find a local supplier for the white strips to get a more personal feel for the coloration of the LEDs, may have to resort to trying online ordering for testing.

2nd run should more resemble Juiceh's

And this is bad? :) I think that black vert looks amazing! I would do the same thing but I just bought an FC2000 bumper...no FTP's :(

I know this thread is old but if anyone is interested in modding/rebuilding a set these could be a good candidate.
Make me an offer!
