SMG Racing is Awesome!

Steve and Jerry over at SMG Racing in RI does great work.
https://www.facebook.com/SmgRacing Member Name: SMG944 Aside from doing many other things to my car, they tuned it today and it hit 340hp on DynoJet at 14psi. I'm having some ignition problems. Planning to change the plug wires and coils and retune again next week. Hoping to hit 350-360 at 14psi. Just wanted to thank them and give them a good review on the forum. If you're looking for a rotary mechanic, they are the people to go to in the RI and MA area. They also fixed my twin turbo boost pattern issue quickly. They are reliable, quick, professional, friendly and they might even buy you lunch. Also got a nice poster of Brooke Burke on the bathroom door too. Here is a pic of my 3rd Gen next to his customers CYM. |
Plus 1 for Steve / SMG Racing. Very knowledgeable.
I knew Steve did work on the side, but I never knew he had a shop. Where is it located? I was thinking of heading to KDR/Speed-1 in Pennsylvania for another tune with Dave, but it definitely just got much easier. I'll have to set up a session with SMG over the summer. Impressive numbers and a great looking FD by the way. |
Hi Rick,
Beautiful car and sweet setup. I'm waiting on the HKS Twin Power. It's currently on back order. I can't wait to install it to stop some of the top end break up. Steve's shop is at 100 Bellow Street in Warwick RI. He tunes out of a dynojet in Fall River. Their number is: 401-954-7401 They definitely do a great job. They are working on my friends FD now. We're going to do another dyno tune in about a week or 2.

Feel free to PM me, and I can shoot you my number to see what you have in mind. He also said you had a lot of low end power and kept kicking the rear out. What size tires are you running? Thanks again for the info Zach. As for the ignition amp, I just installed the HKS Twin Power and it fixed my break up issues. I'd start there before going with coils. |
wow i didnt even see thanks alot dude . get a hks twin power and we go retune it again
|
Hey Gerry,
How's the FC coming along? Hopefully the twin power will be here this week and we can do the tune sometime next week. Hi Rick, I have 9.5 265 Nitto NT05 Tires in the rear with about 70% thread. I have a carbon fiber hatch and I think the weight reduction may be also a cause of the rear tire spinning. I'm currently running the buddy club racing specs and the settings for both front and rear is set at medium. They have 15 level adjustments but I have not played around with the settings yet. There is about 1 inch clearance from the tire to the front and rear fenders. It seems to slip bad in wet conditions but dry is not too bad. Seems like you have track experience. What settings would you run for track use? What settings would you run for autocross use? Here are the 2 events that I signed up for. This is going to be my first time autocrossing and driving on a road coarse. https://www.motorsportreg.com/index....4#.UaTjl9jivXR Boston Chapter BMW CCA - Ultimate Calendar Event What events do you do? We should get a MA/RI meet together. Thanks for your help. |
Sweet ride. The street port sounds nasty. Hope you're leg is better.

We should get a MA/RI meet together. Thanks for your help. I have limited track experience, not nearly as much as I'd like. I have had great luck with the following suspension set up: 25.5"F, 26.25"R, +5* Caster F, -1,5* Camber F, -1.4* Camber R, +0.08" Toe F, +0.02" Toe R, corner balanced, with 225/50/16 tires (Dunlop Direzza's - best bang for the buck). I have since upgraded to 295/35/17s and 255/40/17s and need a new suspension tune. I run stiffer suspension with softer tires to start but adjust throughout the day. Give an autocross event a shot, invest in a temp tire gauge and see how your tires and car handles and adjust to your favor. It is definitely subjective, but some things just work better than others. I ran the same general settings for autocrossing as open track days. Let me know if you run an event and I will come out and give you a hand, even if I'm not running it (i love being around that kind of stuff). I have had fun running SCCA autocross events, but the fun to waiting ratio is way skewed. I was competitive for a season when I invested in R-comps, but haven't had fun since. Autocrosses are a great way to get to know your cars characteristics and general limits, but after a track day with 100+ miles, it's completely night and day. I believe all seat time is good seat time, so just get out there wherever you can. I'd definitely be up for a MA/RI/CT meet. My friend and I were going to throw my rear diffuser on this weekend, but there's a show in western Massachusetts that I'm hoping to get out to instead. I'd rather throw my hood back on and call it a weekend to get out to see some other rotary powered monsters. Are you going? |
Yup, SMG is awesome. Went to the dyno with Steve yesterday. After adding the HKS Twin Power and put down 374.74 HP at the wheels on a DynoJet. This is on a 99 spec twin turbo running 15psi. It put down 343.46 on 10psi.

It was an easy install and def worth the money. Waiting for one more HKS Twin Power to come in to dyno my buddy's FD. I'll post his dyno sheet when we get it.
