wrap it. helps keeps the heat in the exhaust pipe and not in the engine bay.

I would wrap it... I generally wrap all my performance cars exhausts if I pull them out... just a habit. I don't go out of my way though, just if it happens to need to come out for one reason or another. It is a nice way to reduce engine bay temps, keeps the coating on wires from getting heated and brittle (as much), etc. There really isn't a good reason not to, as long as you do it right.

Downside is that it will eat welds in a jiffy!
This is especially true for inferior welds.

So is there a general rule of thumb on how many inches you need to keep the wrap away from the welds? Or does the wrap have to be directly on top of a weld to make it fail, which would presumably heat up the weld beyond it's normal heat range and make it fail I'm guessing?

so the patch the last owner welded in that you can see right by the motor would not last you say if i wrap. the patch is wry wll done with same thickness metal.

there was a thread already that had this in the single turbo section i believe and they get more in depth.

If you've got the down time, and money, ceramic coating is nice. That part'd be about $70.00 to coat, and have a lifetime (limited) warranty.

I just really like the original picture of the header with the homeade mountain-dew bong in the background. Classic. . .

Its hard to say wrap or no wrap. Alot of thc gets lost in the water, but alot gets wasted in a wrap just by burning up. I would say +1 for wrap though

BENDER420 04-09-08 09:14 PM

Thats the best answer yet!
It is getting warm enuf around here so i will be able to sit outside and actually get this thing done!

Rotary-Celica 04-10-08 12:53 AM

I have heard that a wrap on a rotary header keeps too much heat in the rotors and housings and side seal springs wear prematurely.

anyone else hear this?

st1llet0 04-10-08 08:52 AM

If you need to keep heat away from something, wrap it. If you don't NEED to keep heat away from something, don't wrap it. The header will rust a LOT faster with a wrap on it, the wrap tends to suck in moisture from the air and just hold it there while the exhaust is cooling down.
