Why Dyno in 3rd and not 4th??
From what I've heard, its better to do a dyno run on a gear with a ratio of 1.0 which would be 4th in out cars, so whats the point of doign it in 3rd gear?? Is it just more comon?
Also, what would hapen if a dyno is done in 2nd or even 1st gear?? how diff would the results be?? |
No such thing as "better" - all the guys who complain you "need" to dyno in 4th gear is reduced friction due to the 1:1 transmission ratio.  All DynoJet dynos can do a drivetrain friction run/calculation which you can apply to ANY gear run.
3rd gear (or higher) is recommended for turbo cars, as lower 1st/2nd gears do not always present a big enough engine load to run at full boost levels. I prefer 3rd gear runs, as it is enough to load the turbo, but it's over quicker than any of the higher gears.  Quicker run = less stress on the dyno machine and your vehicle; remember, the car cools down due to the fans in the front of the car. -Ted |
PFS dynos modified cars in 3rd gear as less chance of poping the motor...(fuel starvation)..
