What Is Wrong With My Car!!!!

i have a second gen non turbo. today i was driving in fourth gear at 40 mph then i dropped to 2nd and the car started sputtering just like it was out of gas. and my gauge said that i was low on gas, but when i filled up it kept sputtering. it feels just like when the car is running out of gas and i dont know what it is. and my air intake system is fully intact so i know its not that. it doesnt do it constantly but several times a minute. and there is a clicking noise in the dash now.:o:

i got an 88 n/a and its doing the same thing it wont let you get up in revs with power it sputters and shake the car. but i messed the intake and throttle body earlier today and it stopped but went back at the end of the day.

My 84 se is sputtering real bad right now. It is kinda random. It will not sputter at all until 6k and then it will sputter once. Other times it will not allow me to go past 3.5k or will start to sputter real bad when the secondary throttle plates open.

I am in the middle of searching and people are usually pointing to the fuel pump or something. I would just like to know exactly what the fuel pump does before it goes out.

In my daily driver dodge the fuel pump did something similiar to that. While it may not be a rotary; a fuel pump is basically a fuel pump. I experienced some sputtering at higher RPMs. It would sputter worse the more load that was put on it (which of course would demand more fuel from the pump). Put a new pump in it and it was good to go. Hope this helps.

The clicking noise could be the relay to the fuel pump cycling it off & on.

Take the line from the fuel filter (driver's side firewall) and run it into a fuel can; unless you pull the fuel pump fuse and start the car, it'll spray gas everywhere, so be careful. Next, locate the YELLOW connector with a BLACK RUBBER boot around it. It's on the passenger side, next to the boost sensor, air box, and variable resistor (86-88). Jumper that and measure how much fuel it pumps within a minute (Gallons Per Minute; GPM*60=GPH)). Comapre that with the specs (I forget what GPM it's supposed to flow).

Next, hook a pressure gague to the line and measure how much pressure it puts out (via jumper method above). It should be around 64-83.5psi.

If your pump checks out okay, then you've got a different problem.

When a fuel pump is "on the way" out, it'll start flowing much less, as well as have quite a bit less pressure. Typically, they just get to the point where they start blowing fuses or just sieze all together.

If the fuel pump is in good condition, replace your fuel filter. Symptoms of a bad filter are usually something along the lines of normal pressure and low flow.

Make sure your 5/6th ports are actuating. Located on the passenger-side of the intake manifold, near the exhaust. There are 2 "cans," (pressure servos). The levers should have plenty of spring, but not bind or be extremely hard to move. A good test is to start the car, look at the actuator rods, and goose the throttle. They should start moving (only works on 86-88 models; 89-91 models are RPM activated).

You really need to be more specific on your description; what RPM does it happen at? Put it in 2nd gear starting at 10mph. Floor the accelerator, and tell us what happens and at what RPM it occurs at (a "ballpark" figure works great).
