What does everyone do with trashed housings/irons?
I have at more than one full engine worth of bad housings and irons. For some reason I cant bring myself to throw in the trash. What does everyone do with these? Can you sell to a metal recycler? Anyone have any use for these at all?

some scrap yards will pay your for them, since they are aluminum and iron.. and separate. :)
also, I think there are a couple of engine builders that do things like cermet coating to restore housings. maybe they could use them? and are the irons beyond a good lapping? |
Ummm I use mine as a cool conversation piece in my living room. Most people have no idea what it is so I try to explain. I have an old rotor sitting in it too.
You could make a cool table out of it or some type of furniture.....maybe something like this... http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...8/image013.jpg -josh:) |
Some people hold on to them and put them someone safe and out of the way. Wishing for a way to be able to fix them in the furture...
|
Some places will collect them and create displays (often with a clock) out of them. I've got bad housing with a rotor in it as a display in my office.
|
I heard that some people ceramic coat them...
|
i always have use for all of them, but especially rotor housings. depending on how quickly you'd want to get rid of them, i'd be more than willing to take some off your hands. i should be passing through your state within 6 weeks or so. other than that, i'd pay to ship. PM me ...

but what do you do with them??? diabolical1
|
I practice porting on them
|
I have a bunch that I have cryogenically frozen so in the future when rotary science improves they can be thawed out and be brought back to life and repaired.

lol ^ ask mike b what he's doing... it's a pretty cool idea... dunno if he wants to wait till the car show this weekend to tell anyone. I'm sure it's been done before but regardless it's neat-o!

I practice porting on them as well :)

I have 2 engines (S4 and S5) and 4 rotors (obviously). I think I may try my hand at porting and rebuilding one for some sort of go-cart, future car, crazy project, I dunno I haven't decided yet. One engine has a cracked water seal and the other has a blown apex seal, I'll have to open them up and see how they are.
I think the bad parts will be saved along with other car components (shift knobs, clutches, etc) and made into a future display once I get a house. My friend has blown engine parts all over his instead of 'artwork', it looks really cool, especially the pistons that had valves go through them. |
.........
...fish tank? |
I use my rotors as book ends.
And one housing and rotor (painted a shiny silver) as a display next to my bed. Shayla |
