what are the cats for

ok i was just wondering what are the cats for do you need the are they just for
smog reason. where i live we dont have to worry about emissions so will this effect the motor if i remove them . does the motor need some back pressure too work right
will i lose torque if removed . and what are the pros if removed . and will the exhuast be too loud . no noise level out here either . just need some help to remove or not remove the cats

cats are for cleaning your exhaust of hydrocarborns. thats it. some na cars use exhaust backpressure to open the 6th ports and removing the cat and freeing up exhaust flow can cause them not to function properly. back pressure has nothing to do with torque, exhaust velocity does. the exhaust shouldn't really be much louder. pros to remove far outweigh cons. unless you love the ozone and trees and birds......................

yep there just for emissions. and yes, the engine does need some backpressure, but from what i understand, not as much as piston engines. do you have the stock manifold? the manifold is the biggest restrictor in the exhaust system. you will not lose torque. i would remove both cats, but have a muffler. that will give you a pretty loud sound with good performance. or if thats too loud, add the main cat back on, but i would definately get rid of the pre cat. just my opinion.
