Turbo failure question/help

Turbo failure question/help

hey guys,
I have a 93 non sequential twin turbo w a fresh rebuild from Pettit, roughly 3-4K on new motor/ turbos. Today I went on a short drive down the block and at about 6k rpm in second I heard a pop similar to a bov but obviously different as well. Long of the short the compressor side of the rear turbo came off and the snap ring was hanging around the turbo side of the housing. I’m assuming the snap ring failed however I don’t know if that was the primary reason or the result of something else failing to do it’s job resulting in its failure. It looks like I may need to remove the turbo manifold to reinstall it but I’m honestly not 100% yet.

Anyone have any ideas as to what would cause this to happen or the best way to go about reinstalling the comp side with snap ring? Thanks in advance

Sounds to me like the compressor nut backed off. I put red thread locker on mine during assembly. My question is is why there is a snap-ring on the compressor side? Every journal bearing turbo I have pulled apart there are no snap rings on the outside just the four inside the CHRA. Maybe a pic is in order? Did the turbo's come completely assembled or did you install the compressor and turbine?

These turbos were installed by Pettit when the engine was rebuilt. I spoke with Cam yesterday and he says he’s never had it happen on a street car only his race car but he believes the boost is to high for the stock comp housing which is a little not cool seeing as how it’s where he tuned it too @ about 13-14lbs. So now I got a few damaged fins and a nice gouge in the housing. Luckily the damage wasn’t worse but the turbos only have 3-4K miles so it’s frustrating. He also said I should be able to re install the snap ring without removing the entire manifold but seems unlikely to me if it’s going to be done and seated properly.

I may have not described the issue accurately but the snap ring is applied from the CHRA side not comp side and it’s definitely the only thing holding the comp side to the CHRA side. Also I can feel a bit of play in the turbine which he said is normal. Question is how much is normal. I always thought it should be nice and tight.

I wouldn't just reinstall the turbine without disassembling the CHRA to ensure no damage happened to the journal bearing/turbine oil rings or the area surrounding the journal bearing. The snap rings are either all the way seated or they're not. Going back and re-reading I missed the part about the snap ring on the turbine side, and thought you were speaking on the compressor side my mistake. Moving onto the compressor wheel I would replace, and clean up the compressor housing or replace depending on how deep that gouge looks post clean up (hard to say from the picture). When you replace the compressor wheel get it balanced with the turbine as a set at this point your already doing a rebuild at least mostly which as I stated above I would plan for replacement on that as well as the piston rings on the turbine shaft. If you have a warranty even better as you can send it to them for repair. As for play you may get some fwd/aft movement dependent on wear of course but not radially. If you have radial it's time for a rebuild plenty of shops to get the rebuild kit from including the dynamic seal. The rear snap ring only holds the journal bearing in the rear of the CHRA why it moved as much as it did is why I think the nut backed off or wasn't torqued depending on thread clocking 1/8 turn left hand thread, or 1/4 turn right hand thread past torque value.

Minor edit...

After some more coffee and re-read I was running that psi in an S4 without failure different turbo yes but all journal bearing turbo's operate the same only difference would be shaft size as mines a small shaft vs larger shaft od. Things happen and parts fail. Hopefully they make it right with you. If there isn't a warranty there are many quality video's on youtube for disassembling journal bearing turbo's which include step by step. Also there is a shop that I would recommend for rebuild kit's just not sure how the mods feel about linking. PM sent with more information regarding the kit.
