alright, i am a member of a civic forum, and there is a guy on there who thinks that rotary engines are cheap...

now i dont know much, but i DO know that they are pretty pricey...

i need some hard evidence to disprove his theory about the pricing, so could some of yall help me out here??

this is for the lounge, not the tech section. average rebuild price ranges from 500(rebuild kit) to 3k+ full assembled motor with porting, special seals etc. jdm used motors can be had decently cheap but its still used. rotaries tend to cost less due to their simplicity. they are also easier to cast and machine. you must remember the more expensive engines have porting etc done to them which would equate to you buying a motor that is already ported, aggressive cams, etc. so generally when compared to piston engine of equivalent modification they tend to be cheaper. that is not to say they are cheap though.

anyone that has more experience in buying rotaries and pistons, please speak up.

Yes, this does belong in the lounge...

Personally I don't like this CSTurbo240, sounds like a real chode who doesn't know when to shut his mouth and admit he is wrong. You can rebuild the motor yourself for 1K(look for rebuild kits at www.racingbeat.com), less if you buy the parts seperately. You can buy a fully reman motor from mazda with a warranty for about 2K...and a nicely built motor for about 3.3K(www.pettitracing.com). The reason these motors blow is because they aren't taken care of. A honda won't blow and are pretty moron proof, but to work on the rotary you need to know what you are doing. Not everyone owns a 7 because there isnt enough cars and enough passionate people. You can't slap on a intake and exhuast and turn up the boost with a boost controller like many would..one ping is all it takes with this motor. Any one of us could have bought a piston engined car, but we wanted a pure sports car with no compromises..that is a 7. Many true enthusiasts of the 7 know what it takes to make it run, last and perform well. For about 4K, like stated in the thread, the FD will put out about 315 rwhp and be damn reliable.

Last point:
Why in the world would you think that they should be cheap? Would you expect a Supra TT, NSX, or 300ZX TT motor to be around 1K?? Compared to the 7s competition the motors are cheap!

But he is right, and didn't deserved to be flamed like that. Before those guys treated him like that they should have already had solid proof and understanding. 500, is about half the price for a rebuild on an FD (if you do it yourself) but it about right for ealier models. And that is a full rebuild, but i you are going to open up the motor you might as well do a full rebuild!
