I use MTL with no problems. I don't think you'll notice any difference between the MTL and the MT90

Does anyone use the Mobil one 75w-90 fully synthetic?
I was going to put that in my FD.... Patrick |

I'm no expert on oils and don't claim to be, however, Ivan the renowned Bay Area RX-7 mechanic advises against using MTL. He says it's too thin and falls right off the gears rather than protecting. He recommends RedLine MT90.

Well, that's kinda pointless, but i did kindof speak a little quickly. MT 90 is 75W90 GL-4 gear oil
MTL is 75W/80W GL-4 gear oil Someone posted something a while ago (last year, i'll see if i can find it) that they heat up and break down damn near the same. It was from a reputable website, so needless to say, i don't think any of us will be able to tell the difference. Just change the oil more often than 40K miles and you'll be fine. but they smell and taste the same :) ~Tom |
ok so i'll pick up the MT90,
another thing how many bottles do i need? |
I've always used MTL, from what I under stand it has the 'perfect' co-efficient of friction for syncros, where as regular gear oil is too slippery causing harder gear changes.
I've used it in 3 cars so far, 2x 87t2 and a 93. Shifting starts out the same but then all of a sudden shifting gets smoother and smoother. I won't use anything else in my cars. |
I bought something like 10 bottles, i don't think i used 'em all. I think it's like 4.5 for the tranny and maybe 2.3 for the diff. Again, i use MTL in both now, but have had MT90 it there as well, no difference.

The tranny itself uses 2.6 qts or 2.5 L.
Is anyone going to answer my question about Mobil One? Has anyone used Mobil One 75W90 Fully synthetic gear oil? Patrick |
yeah, the book said 2.8 quarts, I think...but I could only fit 2.5-2.6
If anyone has used Mobil One, they would've spoken up, it not that we aren't answering, it's that we haven't used it. :) |
Maybe I will try it. Mobil one makes good products, and I can get it at the local parts store...;)
Later, Patrick |
Sorry for the delay :)
I have been useing Mobil 1 in my gearbox and in the rear axle for about 1.5 years. I have not had any problems and continue to be able to shift very fast with my short throw shifter. I can't coment on the cold weather (cold fluid) shifting as I only use the car when it is warm outside. The car is used mostly for auto-x, track days and about 3k miles on the road for fun :D BTW - gearbox is a 2nd gen NA box, rear is a 84-84 SE LSD rear. |
Oh, damn, i forgot to mention....people have recommended Neo fluids for the tranny/diff. Said it's better than Redline, but i've never tried it. Pretty much consensus is....if you're using the original stock fluid....ANYTHING is awesome.

Shock proof?
I have used Heavy Weight Shock Proof for years now and I swear buy it from 1st to 3rd gens. It makes a night and day difference.
