timing light for rotary engine?
 

Hi all

Just with respect to tuning up a rotary, can you use the standard inductive timing light that one normally uses on a conventional piston engine?

Dum question, but I'm new to rotaries.

yeah

yes you can, it works the same way. You are still just monitoring when the spark fires in accordanance with the rotation of everything. Just like a piston engine.

Yup. However, everyone I've talked to has suggested using a self-powered timing light (one that clips on to the battery for power or has it's own battery). I don't know if the inductivly-powered ones will work or not.

The other suggestion I'll make is to re-mark the timing marks on the main pulley before you even bother trying to set the timing. Years of grime tend to make them nearly impossible to see. Colored nail polish or even just whiteout work fine for making them visible again.

a regular inductive works fine
the ignition systen is the same as any other car
just remeber it has 2 ignitions systems

I'd suggest an old school non-advance light: The new ones have too much electrickery and can't seem to keep up when you check the timming at high revs.
