Thinking of adding an oil tank, thoughts?

I have been thinking of adding an inline oil tank from the oil cooler out, into an oil tank, and then back into the block to provide increased oil storage at the oil return to prevent oil starvation in case an oil line blew. (Just blew a line on the freeway last week.) Engine should be okay, I shutdown and shifted neutral. I have been thinking by adding an oil tank where the outlet is on the bottom leading back into the block. That way even if oil pressure was lost through the lines, the remaining oil in the tank could gravity feed down and save the engine. I have found a pretty cheap tank, and I already have -10 lines, I may go ahead and add the oil tank, as long as it doesn't leak it cant hurt I figure.

I don't think this will work. The outlet of the oil cooler is at the same level, if not just a smidgen higher, then the inlet at the back of the engine. The rear inlet needs pressure to force the flow UP to the oil filter. The tank would not drain on it's own because of this.

Your line probably blew because of the age of the hose. preventative maintenance is the best in this case.

You'd need a gas chamber to retain pressure and a check valve to prevent backfeeding.

So, basically, you want to reinvent the Accusump. :)

Me, I like the idea of using an external pump to scavenge the oil pan dry, and route that up to a deaeration tank, which would feed the old oil pickup. (Sort of a half assed dry sump setup) But then I'm a little funny about wanting my lubricating/cooling fluids to be liquid and not foam.

x2 Just run an Accusump and be done with it.
