tension bolts

I was told by a rotary mech that when tightening up the engine tension bolts (all 18) that they must be torqued more than what is on the manual. Normally its 28 ft/lbs. He told me that whenever he is building race engines he always torque them up to 40 ft. lbs..is this procedure OK???..

He said the reason he torques it that much is to prevent leakage..THis is on high horse power rotary engines.

I dunno about 40 ft-lb, but the MAX I would go is 32-35ft-lb.&nbsp TOO tight on the tensions bolts actually seizes the rotors and side seals up - you can tell when you spin the engine by hand after you're done with the tension bolts.&nbsp Overtightening the tension bolts really does you no good, as there haven't been failures due to too loose torque on the tension bolts.
