Switching From A V8 Rx-7 Back To Rotary...A Few Questions
 

So I had a 86 N/A before my 351w FB but I can't lie, I loved that 86 and want to give rotaries another shot but wanted to do my research first, I just have a couple questions and if you have the time to answer them I would greatly appreciate it. :icon_tup:

First, I was told the main reason Rotaries blow Apex Seals is because of detonation, is there any truth to this? I have E-85 very accessible in my area and could run that, would running E-85 get rid of this problem?

I believe this one might be in FAQ's but is it a good idea to premix with every fillup?

I'm going to want to go 13B Turbo, is there a specific year of the blocks I should look for? I heard the pre 86's were better, also does mileage matter if compression is good?

That's about it, I'm going to be doing a lot of research coming up before I decide on a car but thanks ahead of time.

Oh boy. Two main things kill rotaries: 1) Being overheated, 2) Running too lean (especially on a turbo car).

Premixing is only for cars with disabled metering pumps. If you premix a factory, unmolested RX-7, you will essentially be OVER-oiling it on top of the oil that's being pumped throughout the motor and making huge clouds of smoke I'm sure.

There was no turbo 13B before 1986. The 86-88 Turbo made ~180HP, and the 89-91 Turbo II made ~200HP, mostly from the addition of the twin-scroll turbo design.

Mileage really doesn't matter, chances are the motor has been pulled before in ANY car, so it's your gamble. Having documentation from the previous owner is almost a must. You should also find a car that wasn't up north or you will spend most of your days killing the 20 year's worth of rust from road salts.

On an extra note, I have heard that people who have motors on premix don't suffer carbon buildup and generally last longer.

Run ALS or RA seals with premix you'll love rotary once again. Good luck!
