Swaping a 6 Speed

Looking for some info, Does anyone know of a company that makes an adaptor to mount up a six speed from any domestic cars (IE Corvette, Mustang, Ect.) I recall seeing a thread from forever ago about this, but cant find it.

And before anyone gets pissy and asks why i would want a 6 speed, realize that i am stationed in Germany and while on the autoban it would be nice to have a numaricly lower cruiseing gear. Because ultimatly the only way to get better gas milage besides haveing a well tuned car is slowing the engine down....

Rx-8 tranny doesnt bolt up?

AFgreasemnky 12-11-05 02:45 AM

Yes it should, but no one has done it yet but the gear box is weak, and has had many problems since its intoduction. I know you can order a custom geared tranny from curry so all i really need would be a bellhousing adaptor to mate with the 13B.

mono4lamar 12-11-05 03:40 PM

nope... and if you searched you would have seen that the bell housing is completely different and this is a stupid question. now with that said the rx7 has very good gearing for crusing. plus if your really stupid enough to want this i hope your rich enough to have this made.... no there is no information on this 6 speed tranny. closest thing is puttin in ls1, ls6, or any other v8 that would allow the mating of a 6 speed to it. if you want 6 gears your gonna pay for it. id say for you sir sell the 7 and get a supra... you dont belong here if you dont like the 5 speed gearbox.

Notice sir i said no need for pissy people, and to optimize gearing for my car is what i want. Now because you are a fucking retard ill let this one slide. And by the way it turns out there IS a bellhouseing adapter for a TKO tranny. So fuck off.

Could you change your final drive?

lastphaseofthis 12-11-05 10:27 PM

yes he could and that would bea easyer and cheap then again he might just want to have a 6th gear, personaly i would do both.

artowar 12-11-05 11:30 PM

If you're asking about an FD, Chuck at rotaryextreme.com has a Greddy six speed conversion for the stock transmission housing listed on his website.

Will the Greddy six speed work in a FC? And yes i planned on useing a Auto tranny final drive

ArmyOfOne 12-12-05 03:06 AM

Hey greasemnky where are you stationed? I'm over at Wiesbaden. If you need any help with this stuff I will gladly drive out to where ever. I'm currently working on a transplant and the military does have pretty good craftshops. So just drop me a line.

mikey D 12-12-05 12:02 PM

i hate the fact that so many people give you their asshole opinions on this site rather than just answer your question.

i have been pondering upgrading using a cobra R 6 speed myself so i was curiouse to......
glad you asked the question

I think Advanced Adapters is a place that could help you out in making that adapter plate you are looking for. I have heard they can pretty much adapt anything and have done a good job with my Jeep Tranny. ;) If they can't do it maybe they know someone who can..

I know they mostly do tranny/transfercase swap stuff which won't help fully but I have heard of them doing other random odd job stuff too. Its worth an ask.

Thanks for putting him in his place because I hate when people go off when all you did was ask a simple question. I know your not asking to get bitched at. All your asking for is help and some ass has to come and be a dick!

thanks again,

yeah chill out man, i mean cmon dude!

Sorry, I just wanted to get on my soap box because all the guy did was ask a simple question and someone always has to be an asshole. If you can help him please do, but if not you don't have to be mean.

thanks,
-josh

im very sorry i just saw it as a noob question... good luck as i am sorry

SureShot 12-15-05 08:13 AM

I think your most practical option is the 3.90 diff and/or taller rear tires & wheels.

AFgreasemnky 12-15-05 10:55 AM

Yeah ive already got some 17" tires on my ride, and i figured going to the 3.90 would be a good way to go as well. I can just swap to the 3.90 gears and keep my LSD right?

fc_dorifto 12-16-05 11:08 AM

turbo or n/a ???

Rhode_Dog 12-16-05 03:28 PM

HKS and Greddy make six speed gearsets. There seem to be slews of Japanese companies that make crossmissions (close ratio gear sets?) but most are usually five speed.

The Greddy setup comes as dog engadgement. I think the HKS comes as synchromesh or dog gears. Both are just gear sets and some other misc parts. They also keep the stock input shaft(not sure), but your looking more for highway gear then stronger tranny parts (I would imagine the gears themselves are stronger). There were some threads a while back that had specs on the gearing, couldn't find them again though.

You would probably have more luck asking some of the people in the Far East forum or maybe even the 20B forum.

I RATHER CHANGE THE GEARS THAN BUY Rotaryextremes $6000 conversion.

3.9 final gears with a high 1st,2nd,3rd, make 4th a little bit longer ,and 5th too long for top speed + help out with the mpg ,

Prôdigy2nd 12-16-05 04:17 PM

Rhode_Dog is right i remember, seeing not to long ago a 6 speed conversion using the same housing (if i remember correctly). and it is gear swaps, and and final 6th gear, what i can remember it cost about $6000 US for just the gears then you have to swap it yourself. not sure if it would be worth it but if you wanna try ti go ahead, all the props to ya. I'l lpoke and Prod and bit see if i can't find the website it was on.

If you think about it, a lot of work is involved to make a six speed gear set to make all the parts work, the high cost can be attributed to several things.

1. HKS/Greddy. Need I say more? Their shit is expensive.
2. Not a high mass selling product, how many cars around have these? I haven't seen any on this forum.
3. R&D

Now you could always find a machine shop/fabricator(s) to imitate what Greddy and HKS have already done. It would still be expensive...oh well, gotta pay to play.

Mazda_Power 12-18-05 09:11 PM

Just to clear some stuff up, the C5 'Vette has the transmission mounted in the rear. So if you got it to work it would take some serious fabrication.
