I own a 1983 1st gen rx7 and i am in the process of having a 1988 turbo series 4 engine rebuilt to install in my car. The engine is being street ported and installed with stock turbo and intercooler however i have a speed cut, short shifter, and walbro internal fuel pump to install with the engine.

Future modifications would include larger turbo, injectors, intercooler, stand alone management however for my next step I was considering my ignition; purchase of an AEM twin fire ignition module or MSD 6al system...

My question is as follows: Would my ignition be the best choice as the next step in performance upgrade or should i be looking at another aspect?

Look into an ECU upgrade. Your factory ECU will not appreciate that street ported engine. Get the ECU and a tune before you hurt your new investment...

Thanks A-Spec...but when you say an ECU upgrade are you referring to a "piggy back" management or a full stand alone management system?...Will either one work?

Ideally, a full stand alone would be your best bet. A piggy back will only get you so far and may not even accomplish what you need. Try looking at a Microtech or a Power FC. They cost a little more than a piggy back, but, will be a good purchase in the long run.

As far as the ignition system, are you using the ignition system from the 1st gen car or 2nd gen engine? The 2nd gen stock ignitions system is an excellent system, more powerful then most factory cars, even those produced today. If you are using the stock 2nd gen system, I'd spend the money on something other then the ignition system.

Guys thanks alot for the information, please forgive me as i am new to rotaries but i love the car and engine and i am learning each day by researching and interacting with other fanatics. I did some research and i am interested in the Microtech LT 10s or Halteck system (i was considering a Power FC setup but i THINK they dont have an adapter/harness for a series 4 engine) but i dont know if there is a reliable tuner here in Trinidad for either system...of the Microtech and Halteck which will be better (more features), easier, and more reliable to tune for a series 4 engine. With regard to the ignition system, i have the coils and wires for the engine...would that be considered the ignition system, if no what else would i need to complete the ignition system.Again, much thanks for the assistance, it is much appreciated!

In regards to ignition, he's referring to the S4 stuff. 2nd gen coils are VERY strong, and you probably won't have to upgrade any of that stuff. Other than plugs & wires.

oh ok...but can anyone advise on a reliable and easily tunable system for a series 4 engine...i am leaning towards a Microtech LT 10s system, can anyone provide some insight on a system that they are personally using with rotaries?

Microtech LT10, nice, reliable unit to use.
