Strange steering behavior

In this post I’ll use the word “resistance” to describe a state where the steering wheel becomes heavy and difficult to turn. As if there was no power steering.

The behavior I’ve been experiencing since purchasing my car not too long ago is the occasional onset of resistance in the steering wheel. I’ll take a number of 90 degree turns no problem, then suddenly (actually not so suddenly now that I’m expecting it) there will be resistance in the wheel as I try to turn it. Sometimes the resistance will manifest itself half way though the turn.

This behavior is not related to speed, breaking, accelerating, gear, power (as far as I can tell), or anything else obvious.

Has anyone here ever experienced such a problem, or have any suggestions?

BTW, I have a:
1988 TII w. power assisted steering (if I remember correctly)

what you've described above seems very similar to what i had on the 3rd Gen. This happened after dp install. I found the steering column (?) nut brushes the downpipe when i lock the steering to the right.

First check to power steering fluid level it could be low. If it is then you have to find out why. Or the rack or pump is going.

This seems a little different then the problem you were having on your 3G fd3s7007. The resistance seems unrelated to the angle of the wheel so I don't think it's any kind of obstruction. More likely it's the pump or rack as jgrewe suggested.

Well, give me some areas to look at this weekend.
