Started the motor without oil today

So sometimes, no matter who it is, we goof up and make mistakes. Today I started the motor with no oil in it, or at most just just what was left on the surfaces of the internals and in the lines and coolers. Today was oil change day so i went ahead and drained the oil and replaced the drain plug. I also decided to replace a bad EGT sensor since the car was jacked up. I had to leave the car to pick up the sensor and the actual installation took about 2hrs. By this time I did not remember that I had not put in the new oil as yet. I went ahead started the motor and it immediately revved to about 5000rpm. I was watching the oil pressure gauge all this time and it did not budge. Instantly I remembered I did not add and shut it down.

The motor ran for 6seconds peaking at about 5000rpm.

I since filled it with oil and started it(initally turning off fuel pumps while cranking for about 10secs to prime it with oil). There were no abnormal sounds and it runs fine.

Is it likely I did any damage? Has this ever happened to anyone else?

pour oil , and then see if you have oil pressure if you have oil pressure , and the car still runs .. then count yourself lucky change the oil very very quickly to clean up any metal shavings and good luck .

First, you should be ok, a few seconds at idle with no oil pressure won't kill it. May have take a
Small amount of life out of it.

I've been working on cars for a living for over 30 years. And I've fired up cars a few times with no oil. I have since developed techniques to prevent myself from doing things like this. I call it flagging.
When I change oil, before I drain it I remove the oil cap and pull the dipstick and put it in plain site. Before I start the car I look under the hood and if the oil cap and dip stick are laying there I know there is no oil in it.

you'd still have 2 quarts roughly in it,so if you ran it for a very small time and caught it right away I can't see you having done any damage to it.The oil wouldn't have worn off that quickly.

Meh, you have 2 choices. Pull the engine right now and replace it or keep running it.

You will know if the bearings go- it goes tick tick tick at idle and the oil gets sparkly.
