speedometer doesn't work...

got a 3rd gen and frenz say that it can be behind the instrument panel or somewhere on the tranny. this is my first rx7 and i am not familiar with any of the electronics. what is the part numbers and price range to get this problem fixed. is it easily fixable? or do i have to drop the tranny cuz the wire is on top? wanna get this fixed cuz i like to know what speed i am driving at. thanx guys in advance.

"Actually, officer, I have no clue. I just got the car and the speedo was broken."
"Really? I was doing 120? I had no idea! See, I just got this, and I was used to a minivan before..."

For future reference, this really should go in the 3rd gen forum, since it's specific to a 3rd gen...

There's 4 possibilities.
1. The cable came disconnected from the back of the dash. Remove dash, make sure cable is connected to speedo.
2. The cable came disconnected from the transmission. Not terribly likely, but a possibility.
3. The cable is broken internally. Replace cable.
4. The speedo is broken internally. Replace speedo.

how would you replace the cable? i have the same problem with my fd. If your diff mounts are out and your sshifter hops around a lot could that cause the cable to come loose frome the tranny.

Other possibilities

I'm not sure, but I believe that the 'cable' is actually a wire, because there is a motor on the end that translates mechnical turning from the gear inside the tranny to the speedo. I split that gear and it required that I break open the tranny to replace it. Very expensive, unfortunately - that was the second time I had to crack the case.

that's good.. Then your mileage wont go up as well. If I were you, just drive and use common sense on following others from the behind. That'll way it'll keep you from speeding and tickets you know what I mean.
