SPeaker question

Anyone know how to hook up the speaker looking thing center dashboard on a 95 fd? Well im pretty sure its a speaker im mean it looks like a speaker. my fd has a aftermarket head unit so io dont know if it worked stock but i cant really hear anything out of it and the center channel of the head unit doesnt make it do anything volume wise.

My friend, who installs stereos, helped me install my system (93 fd R1) and he said most people will just disconect that speaker, then he pulled the wires to prevent later confusion. Hope that helps.

Yeah, there's not even a speaker there unless you've got the bose setup. Just a cover. But if you did have the bose, there should be another pair of wires that goes to it. I would only recommend using it if you have a DSP with amplifier that uses center speaker, otherwise it would sound lame. In my daily driver, i have a Sherwood 5.1 DTS setup w/ center speaker....truely kickass.

BOTH Stock stereo systems (BOSE & Clarion) used center speakers if it's not under the grill it was removed - the BOSE Center amp gets its signal from the low level outputs to the door speaker/amps & the Clarion unit gets its signal from the High level signal to the door speakers. The BOSE headunits have no Power Amps built in - The Clarion Head Units have a 4ch x 25w Amp built in. the ctr amps are located behind in the center consol under the trim panel to the left of Glove Box, you have to remove the glove box to get at it. The Bose Amp is 15w output and The Clarion Amp is 25w. Both want to drive 4ohm speakers.
I have a Clarion Ctr. Amp for sale if you need it. Also Alpine makes a nice 2" speaker that can be adapted to fit w/ a simple mounting plate - I can send details if you want.

I *think* you might be mistaken. Everyone I've talked to about it only has a center speaker if they had Bose on the car. Seems weird that they'd put the center speaker in for the non-bose setup, since the built in amp won't even drive it. Also the other speakers are not the same as what would be in the bose setup, leading even mroe to the question why they would do one thing the same and not the others. Anyway, of couse correct me if i'm wrong, but I don't think i am. :D

You're being corrected:D
I have a base model without the Bose and there is a center speaker installed as well as its amp behind the glovebox. When I did my stereo install I tried it with and without the center speaker; I prefered it without. You can easily tap into the center channel amp to make it run with any system, the schematics are in the repair manual.

I 've owned two 93 R1's, both had the center speaker in the dash. Both were taken out by me.

Alright :) Guess i'm wrong. I wonder who took mine out...and more importantly...WHY.

So what's the best route up to that center speaker? Through the console or up through the glove box. Either my speaker is blown or some sort of debris has gotten through the grill. I have a vibration in the sound.

chrislloydus 11-23-01 08:31 AM

why not do it from above ? Price the front edge of the speaker grille upwards then slide it towards you slightly and the grille will pop off . Speaker is held in by four phillips head screws - you'll need a stubby screwdriver to get it out. I guess the wires will still be in place, but you'll need the stereo out too to pull the wires through.

BTW ive got an R1 (no bose) with the centre speaker wired in.
I think Mazda skimped on build costs and built them all the same - if you havent got cruise control, and pop the switch out from the dash, you'll notice all the wiring is there and plugged in !

Aaaaaaahhhhh..... that nasty buzzz is gone!

Dude, thanks for the tip. I'd have been going after that one for a long time from the bottom. Got right in and pulled it out. Actually took me longer to get the melted foam wrap off the connection so I could disconnect the wires.

Thanks!
