smokin engine due to broken water pump

i drive a red 93 rx7 fd(if someone could PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE HECK FD STANDS FOR, I would REALLY appreciate it,its drivin me NUTS).......tt, ANYWAYS...

one night driving home my water pump went taking the belts with it and my engine overheated.

the question is....Do you think the overheat caused the engine or turbos to "go"???(need a rebuild)

i have replaced the water pump and belts but have not finished putting the stuff back together.

FD is part of the vin

the rotor houseings are warped and the coolant seals are dead
you need an overhual

BTW post in the 3rd gen section

ok i've replaced the pump, the belts, and a few vacuum hoses. i started the engine and seems to be fine, but when i took it on the road the alarm sounds and alerts me that i need more coolant, though im not sure exactly how to fill it or how much to put in. i then added coolant in one of the openings near but slightly above the water pump.

if anyone else drives a 93-95 rx7 and knows how and where to fill coolant and how much to put in(or how much it holds) i would appreciate it.

Id get it professionally checked dude... That "add coolant" light kinda translates to "change engine" most of the times...

Hey guys don't jump the gun. It is quite possable that his engine may still be good. My uncles 88GX overheated TWICE and still seems to run perfectly fine.
Maybe all he needs is coolent, so don't just say he needs an ovehaul.
Sounds like you should get it professionally checked though. Then i would go from there...

I don't know about the 93-95 RX-7s, but the 86-92 cars have to be filled with coolant several times before the coolant level is high enough and all the air is purged from the system. Run the engine a bit, let it cool down to where you can safely open the radiator pressure cap, and add fluid. You have to do this a bunch of times.

If at any time while the engine is running you see thick white smoke coming out of the exhaust, smell it to see if it smells like coolant. The only way coolant gets in the combustion area is through the coolant seal. The check coolant light doesn't indicate that a coolant seal is bad. It is bad advice and piss poor maintenance practice to change or rebuild an engine simply based on the fact that the coolant light comes on. Its probably on because you replaced the pump and their is air in the system. Add coolant does not mean change engine. You wouldn't buy a new house because a light bulb burns out.

it is an FD
and you know how they are with water seals

We need more data than that!

How many miles does the engine have? Was their smoking or did the engine temp just get really high? Did you loss any coolant while it was over heating? How long do you think you where driving with the pump not working? Where you cruising or driving hard?

Just because the engine temp got high really doesn't mean the engine's coolant seals are gone. It's how long the engine was abused while not being provided with sufficiant amount of coolant.

the car has 113k miles and they were right the car works but the turbos are shot and i recently bought new ones. some of you were also right about having to fill the coolant multiple times.

I drive a'94 RX7 3rd gen and the car has already it's second engeine (as well as turbo's) because the previous owner's grilfriend drove it with a broken waterpmup. They took it apart in the garage and decided to put in a whole new engine. I have all paperwork with the car where it's been described.
How long she drove it with the broken pump is not clear.

thanx for the replies, i recently purchased new turbos, but besides that the car is now running strong.
