Should i get an FC!!
 

Hi, Currently got a starlet gt turbo at 160bhp,getting tired of torque steer :(

So a mechanic i know bought a FC RX-7 3 weeks ago, i told him how much i like it, and he said i could have it for 2000GBP

its a lovely example, although i havnt had a good look at it yet

He said its been rebuilt 400 miles ago before he bought it but i don't know if hes got proof or not

So ive just got a few questions,

How much MPG am i likely to see on a long run and also im not really clued up on the whole rotary thing but how oftern do they need rebuilding?

It's 280bhp and im wondering how long it realisically will last? and how much would it cost to rebuild it if the worst happened...

Yes get one!
Read a lot about it before romping on it! They are durable if treated well.
MPG: low 20's if you can keep your foot out of it. Mid teens otherwise
Durability: 100k+ at moderate boost levels with a good build and good maintenance
Don't let oldtimers get you down, they forget they were newbs once too

It all depends on how good was the rebuild and how modded the car is. If everything was in spec, and they did a good rebuild, you should at a minimum see 50K miles out of it.

If its modded, expect to see 18 miles per gallon or less.

A rebuild go go from $1000 to over $6000, depending how bad the carnage is.

It apparently had a rebuild 400 miles ago from the previous owner, by a very reputable company in london, although ive asked if hes got proof and 2 times hes avoided answering via text, although he might have just missed that question as i was asking a few other things,

Went and saw the owner today, i am very tempted to buy it just slightly concerned about the mpg... if i could get 20 per gallon i'd be happy!

but as its tuned to 280 also i doubt its achieveable! here are some pics

It sounded amazing, had been out in the rain so doesnt do the matte black paintwork any favors :p

Make sure u red line it regularly to get carbon build up of of the rotors

Pros: Cool, 280hp in a 3000lb rwd car (supposedly), seems like a good price (if rebuilt), Modified, wide fenders, Advan wheels,

Cons: Sub 20 mpg, Two-seats, Modified, Matte black doesn't impress me too much

A few things to consider:
Is this going to be your only car?
Do you have time/skill/money to repair and maintain a 20+ year old car?
Driving the car to squeeze out 20 mpg is no fun. If you buy it, drive it.

Looks like a decent buy to me, but obviously my opinion is going to be biased given the rx7 forum. :D

Mpg isnt too much of a worry as i drive about 30miles a month getting to and from work! + maybe 100 miles social

I wont be contantly worrying about MPG and the gas needle but i wont want to be worried to floor it because of it costing a fortune otherwise there is no point owning one!

I know what you mean about the Matte black it isnt doing the car the most amount of favors, but neither does faded red etc so i dont really mind it

I currently have a (20year old) starlet gt turbo fully modified which get around 24-26mpg so it wont be much different i hop

It is my only car but if it there does become a situation that it isnt driveable, i'll be able to cope for a few weeks.

i did do a college course at college so i have the very basic knowledge

When is a 2 seater Car a "con"?
I find it very convenient that I can't put "her Friend" into the car too!

Max - One thing to keep in mind regarding the quoted MPG is that the American gallon = 3.78 liters, where as your gallon = 4.5 litres.

Since you're in West Sussex I'm going to assume that the rebuild was done by RE:worx, located in Portsmouth.

I used to live in E. Anglia and I would drive down to RE:worx for any work I felt was above my skill level.

I'm not as current on the rotary scene in the UK as I once was, but I think RE:worx should still be able to give it a good once over.

I would suggest checking out MRC (Welcome to the mazdarotaryclub.com website ) as they are a more local to you and will be better able to help you find out who's good and who isn't in the UK. (It's REALLY hit or miss in England, I've seen shops put out some excellent work, and some terrible stuff!!)

Yeah, I've never heard of Garage-D. Another place just outside of London that you might want to drop by is Rotechniks (Rotechniks home page). If I remember correctly they are a little bit west of London, in Grazeley. I went to their re-opening in 2008 (or 2009) and they seemed to have a fairly nice facility.

That's odd about the posting issues on MRC, you might want to try PMing an admin/mod there about it.

Also, another possibility is for you to lurk on FDUK (FDUK Forum - Powered by vBulletin) to see their shop reviews. Unfortunately you won't be able to make an account there without lying, as that site/forum is *just* for FD owners. However, you could still probably get in contact with one of the lead mods/admin there (Mark, aka M@r[<) and tell him that Levi (the guy who gave him the truck nuts) sent ya. He *should* still be fairly plugged into the scene and able to help you find a reputable shop at the very least.

Also, a LARGE portion of what kind of fuel economy you'll be getting will boil down to how your car is mapped. While I was out there I averaged in the VERY low teens for MPG (as measured against the american gallon), but then again my mapping was pig rich and I romped on it... a lot! lol

No idea on the actual mpg, but I broke a new engine in my girlfriends t2 for 2000 miles before the wiring issues got so bad I can't drive it anymore. Injectors flood it out. Anyways, I drove with no boost and it was better on fuel consumption than my 01 ford ranger with 3.8 v6. Drive it conservatively and it shouldn't be that bad. Maybe I'm just used to having a bike that gets ridiculously awesome mpg and a small slow ass pickup that drinks fuel.
