Series7 Rx-7 Fail! Help

Hi,

My name is Nick and new to the forum. had car for 2 and a bit years. runs ok most of the time. done 130,000km. not sure on rebuild history. went to track couple of months ago. ran ok.

Installed powerfc "pwfcfd3s6 010" and did every thing as recommended and took it for a drive. was boosting around .9 bar on the motorway and smoke started pissing out while on boost and started stuttering while knock sensor read 120 on the commander. it turned itself off and couldnt restart her. kept cranking for quite a bit then noticed front trailing lead was off.

Towed the car back home did the atf trick to de-flood. car eventually stated but wouldnt idle smoothly. replaced plugs and leads with OEM parts today and still feels like missing a rotor.

Just posted a video of it starting up and idling on youtube.. can you guys check it out and suggest what could be wrong?

if there's anyone in Auckland,New Zealand who knows something about it and would be keen to give me a hand that would be sweet as bro!!!!.

Any help Much Appreciated.

Regards Nick

Do you have hardwood floors in your garage?!?!?! lol, awesome.

Anyway, what do you have as far as your fuel system goes? .9 bar is REALLY pushing the stock fueling...

I'd def hazard to say it's probably blown, you may want to get a compression test to be sure though.

I'm no expert though.

yeah, i have been blessed with hardwood floors.lol

as far as i know she is stock on fuel system. i ll do the compression test today.
man it sucks to have a blown motor.
Thanks for the reply!!!!!!

Help is on it way...

hey where abouts in Auckland are you?

Would like to help a rotor brother out...

a few questions what all have you done to the car other than the PFC. Looks like you have a FMIC anything else?

also after installing the PFC did you get it tuned?

If your compression tests come back with low compression then its mostly an apex seal. and you will need a rebuild..

If Compression test is good.

I have a Datalog-it I can bring it over and run some logs to try and figure out what is causing the problems.

Happy holidays...

cheerz

Hi,
Cheers for offering to help bro. i live on the shore. mods wise it has an exhaust and the PFC.Every thing else is stock to the best of my knowledge. I installed it and after the self learn procedure i took her for a drive, that's when the she died. should have done a tune first.I ll get on to the compression test soonish and keep you updated.

Happy holidays to you too.

Nick

When you say she's got an exhaust.. how much of an exhaust does it have? Are we talking just an uprated backbox, or a full on replacement?

Honestly the engine should have been fine with just a backbox and the base map of the PFC, stock it's not really meant to boost over .7bar, I have to wonder how it managed to climb all the way to .9...

Also have you tried to use stock ecu after this has happened... it could just be pfc not setup prperly.... did u use the commander to change any boost setting for the twins turbos?

lndczr70 12-30-11 07:37 PM

Hi, fist of all thanks for the reply's, much appreciate it.

rx had the exhaust when i bought her. i think its a 3" cat-back system, seems like the exhaust has been done in Japan. not sure on any other stats.

But i can explain the boost, the PFC is for a series 8 rx 7, i think that's why she boosted .9 bar.
"pwfcfd3s6 010" is for a series 8 and "pwfcfd3s5 010" is for a series 7. but when i did my usual research, they all said it should be fine but the emphasis was made on the sensors and other system except for the boost while researching.PFC was running the base map as well and in the commander, boost was set to .9 bar. i noticed it while trying to get the car started on the side of the road.

The video i have posted is with the stock ECU plugged back in.

did you look at the english version of the manual,i know you have to enable/disable things in the settings part of the hand controller, also take elbow off to adjust the tps, throttle position sensor<i think its called that>screw it in untill it stops then screw out half/3 quarter turn, put elbow back on then turn go to etc, turn boost off disable, then press previous to save data, turn sequential turbo on,inject on,knock,o2,idle,ig control all on,then end setting previous key to save all data and return to etc mode,in etc mode check all sensors are working, black dot means on,clear means off,a square block means theres a fault, turn car on 10mins,head lights up/on,demister on for 5mins,indicators,air con, heater on,take car for carefull drive, come home, check sensors again, turn car off, wait a bit, turn car back on again, should be ok from there, the base maps are ok to drive on untill you get it dyno tuned, put every add on like pod filters and exhausts before tune, they dont like little changes in intake etc with out a tune, hope this helps.

check the map sensor line to make sure it didn't pop off. but in the video it sounds like it is cranking erratically(can hear a flat spot as soon as you started cranking) before firing and revs extremely slowly, sorry but that is a telltale of a blown rotor. only other possibility is a faulty injector or primary injector wiring, but the easiest test is just a compression test to rule out the motor.

if it is the motor then you should get the ECU tuned and modify the fuel system. whoever told you .9 bar on the stock system is ok is full of it. generally at 13psi/.9 bar i find the stock fuel system is extremely lean in the 6K+ range, scary to the point i usually won't push a stock car past 6.5k@13psi on stock fuel. generally simply rewiring the fuel pump is sufficient to get by at 13psi, barely.

Hi Guys,

To "GASnGO fd": unfortunately i didn't do any of that, what you suggested. i plugged the PFC in then did the self-learn for 10 mins, de-mist and lights, and went for a drive. i drove her with care till the on-ramp of the motorway and then i gave her a bit of juice, full throttle. Shouldn't have done that,DAMN! .

One thing i noticed is that, there is a high pitch noise coming from under the plenum chamber after the incident. sounds like a DC motor revving its nuts off. The sound only happens with the PFC not the stock ECU.

I will have to get a Compression tester and do the test on Monday or so.So not looking good at this stage. But Any ways,
"HAPPY NEW YEAR! "

Thanks so much for every ones input.

Regards
Nick
