series 4 T2 problem
here's a run-down of my engine:
140,000km on odometer (approx 85k miles) intake cone filter downpipe high-flow cat cat-back exhaust manual boost controller DIY fuel cut defenser ok, here's my situtation... my exhaust is SPEWING white smoke like there's no tomorrow. i'm assuming it's the coolant seals that have finally failed on me? am i right? oh, as an added note...this started happening out of nowhere. on friday, i drove the car all day, and it seemed fine. ran fine. i parked it, and later restarted it and that's when this started happeneing. so what is wrong with the engine? |
Do you coolent seal test.
If you don't know what that is, feel free to use the search button.. :) |
what does the smoke smell like? are your plugs wet? do you get extra pressue in the cooling system? are overheating?
how is your turbo? what is your oil consumptions like? sorry for the bombardment of questions. many people swear solely by color of the smoke, but i have proven that oil can burn white (as opposed to blue) at times and i'm not convinced that it may not be an oil problem. need some more info ... |
i have yet to do the coolant pressure test.
but...as for the oil consumption...it is perfectly normal. the turbo seemed fine as it was boosting normally earlier on friday. as for overheating, yes, it does seem to climb very quickly...i can notice the needle climb up the gauge even after just a few short bursts of boost during freeway driving. when i say short bursts, i mean NOT wide open throttle...just adding enough throttle to make it boost and pick up speed to pass, etc. my plugs are heavily fouled...they've been in the car for less than 1500km.. lemme take a stab at it.... rebuild time right? |
Sounds like oil to me.
Check the turbo compressor and intercooler pipes - is there a lot of OIL inside? If so, the turbo needs to be rebuilt. Do a high idle test - rev to 4kRPM and hold for 20 seconds. Do you have a lot of smoke out the exhaust? If so, oil control rings are shot - requires rebuild. Make sure your "PCV" is working properly or at least not pressurized. You might want to remove the oil filler cap to see if this changes anything. -Ted |
