S5 vert not starting

Hi everyone I just bought a 1990 vert started fine I adjusted the throttle cable and when I went to start it all I hear is a relay under the dash click. I looked on another thread about jumping a relay under the hood for the starter and no go also checked the starter to make sure everything was connected n it is. Also I compression started it and everything works fine just won't start with starter. Is there anything else I could do? Any help I'd appreciate it. Thank you!

Smash the starter with somthing... see if it frees it up..

Edit: sorry don't smash....tap.. lol

Does the starter engage w/key to start or not. There seems to be some confusion about this. Or does the starter engage but the engine will not start? Engine could be flooded. The S5 can deflood if you press the gas pedal all the way down w/key to start. More info would help.

No the starter won't engage I just hear the relay under the dash I wanna try things b4 I change the starter cuz the car was starting with no problem and I just got it today

You mentioned the Starter Cut Relay near the trailing coil. W/key to start does the Black/Blue wire have voltage to it at this relay? If it does check the 'thicker' Black/Green wire for voltage as well (not the thinner B/G wire, but the thicker of the two B/G wires).

I'm having exact same problem on my 91 vert. What was the solution

To diagnose your problem you're going to have to start somewhere so try what is says in post #5.

I think mine is strater or starter solenoid. It dint act up til i tried to start it one morning for 30min till my battery died then recharged battery and just click nothing.

At the Starter Cut Relay lies a Black/White wire which runs to the starter solenoid. Apply voltage to this wire from the battery and the starter should turn over. If it doesn't then you have narrowed down the problem. Until you narrow you are just guessing.

Forgot you have the S5. The relay is still next to the trailing coil just like an S4 but there are differences between the two models. You need to focus on the thick Black/Green wire of this relay (there are two B/G wires where one is a thin gauge and the other is thicker in gauge). W/key to start this thicker B/G wire must have voltage. If it does then this voltage passes on to the Interlock Switch located at the very top of the clutch pedal. The switch has two wires, one being B/G that comes from the relay and w/the clutch depressed and key to start the voltage from the B/G wire then passes to the Black/Red wire. Once the B/R wire receives voltage it is then directed to the starter solenoid.

Yeah i bypassed the clutch

So then the B/R wire should have voltage w/key to start at the switch.
