aight here's my problem, the other day i was driving around and when i turned off the car i could hear the prestone boiling. that was really wierd, but is this a common problem for fd's? I also noticed that i cant restart the car right after, i have to let it cool down cause it wont start.

What you're hearing is probably the AST doing its job.

And it's a rotary, they are fussy...some just don't like to start when they are hot.

Have you tried "burping" the cooling system? Sounds like you've got air in your system.

umm lol, how do you "burp" the system lol!

throw the car over your shoulder and pat it on the bonett...

open the filler cap(next to the alternator, not on the AST), get a bottle of mixed coolant ready, start the car with the cap off and let it idle. top off the coolant as the leve drops until it stays full. replace the cap.

Burping the system can be time consuming. Be patient, and be sure to keep checking your coolant level before you take it for a drive, adding as nessecary.

That tells me something is causing low compression when you are heating up, whether its getting extremely hot, or maybe the OMP isn't doing its job. Maybe add some premix to the tank and see if anything changes.


The boiling sounds are not supposed to be present on a properly function cooling system. There is too much air in it, maybe burping will resolve it, maybe you have a pinhole leak in a coolant line or in one of the caps. Do you ever get a faint coolant odor? Also, maybe your coolant/water mixture is too low on coolant, too high a % of water will boil at a lower temp.

No, didnt get any odor...what water/coolant % should i mix?

How cold does it get in the wintertime where you live?

Probably go with 50/50 to be safe, in warmer weather you can use 70 water/30 coolant.

Also, be careful when burping the coolant system of air......only remove the cap when the car is cooled down, or you risk getting burned.

To speed up the process, leave the coolant hose off that goes to the back of the throttle body while the car idles, watch it closely and slide it back on the nipple as soon as you see coolant start to come out.

its pretty cold in winter time, should i only put prestone, or still mix it? now do i remove the cap of the ast, or is it another one? do you think you could post a picture just to show me what i need to do. i just wanna make sure i do this right. thanks alot!:)

Do you have an upgraded Aluminum AST or stock one? If an aluminum AST just pull up the lever and turn it left until it comes off.

Honestly man you should look into buying an Aluminum AST. The stock ones are known to go bad, and you don't want to keep overheating your car it will cause damage to your housings. They run $150 at a few places. Worth it in the long run. :)

my buddy said the same thing, i plan on gettin one asap, but right now i need to burp the car, and im tryin to figure out how to do it.
