RX7 FD Maintenance???
 

As some of you may already know from my previous post that I had recently purchased a 1993 RX7 TT FD with a blown engine. Just recently bought a JDM 13B TT motor and swap it. The old engine still works, I could start it up and drive it but the only problem is that theres lots of white smoke coming out and overheats quickly. Is this repairable? Anyways my question is with this new motor, what do I need to do to keep the Maintenance up? Ofcourse I am from Freezing Canada and this vehicle will be parked during winter months. I been told by some people that these motors need to be bagged becuase its a high reving engine. Any tips on keeping the Maintenance up will be appretiated.

The smoke issue is most likely from a blown coolant seal it happens when the car over-heats.

Im gunna assume that beacuse the car is over heating that, thats the reason why the seal blew.

With a problem like this i would have first not got the JDM.
I would have taken apart the engine and rebuilt it.

I suppose you could have just replace the coolant seal, but you would have had the engine apart so it would have been smart to just rebuild it.

It could have been cheaper then your JDM if the housings were not warped.

I am the original owner of a '95 that has its original engine and has never had a major repair. My car has been off the road during the winter months, generally Dec. through March.

The best advice I can give you is to run the car and the A/C every week or two. You want the coolant to circulate, not just sit there. I also recommend using the Mazda Long Life coolant, said to be good for 5 years. I'd change it every 3 years.
If you use another type of coolant, change it every 2 years. Don't use DexCool.
Coolant seal failure is the major weak spot of these engines, but there's no reason an engine can't exceed 100k miles with proper care.

I'd also recommend changing the fuel filter every 20k miles or so. If the filter clogs (and it's a relatively small one) the engine could lean out and detonate.

Thanks for the advice, I will keep that in mind. I was also told by someone that another way to store the RX7 is to fill the block with some type of liquid I cant remember if it was tranny fluid or coolant, Because it keeps the seals moist. Not sure if thats true but thats what I was told.
