RX-8 turbo
 

Not sure where to post this or even if you folks can help...
I have preordered an RX-8 (6 speed). I would like to identify an engine builder that may have the skill to add a twin turbo to my new car. It seemed like the RX-7 builders would be a place to start looking. Please provide a phone contact if you can when you make a suggestion.

Froggie, want and see what options Mazda/Mazdaspeed are going to offer for the RX-8. All I will say is that it will keep the warranty.

HKS has announced a turbo kit that will push around 300 hp or so until they determine the reliability issue. They will increase it later as they learn more about the car.

I talked to a Mazda rep at their RevItUp challenge and was told a prototype MazdaSpeed RX8 Turbo is already being tested.

I'd say hold off on adding a kit for a little bit.

I looked at the RX-7 series III turbo/non-turbo HP ratio and figured that closer to 330HP should be possible with a turbo RX-8. That would be quite a Corvette killer and give a few Italian cars a run for their money.

I think they will more likely supercharge it since the exhaust burns cold. Also the ports are right next to each other so thats kinda pushing it. Twin turbo that is. I bet those ricans will find one way though. If they can put a 13b in a sukuzi swift they can do anything.

The exhaust does not burn cold, just colder by a few hundred degrees. It is no colder than any piston engine out there and those can easily be turbo'd. The 13B based rotaries actually burn too hot for a turbo. We never see this though because the exhaust sleeves rapid expanse in area not only slows down the gasses but cools them somewhat as well. The slower moving air has much less energy. I have new constant area exhaust sleeves in my engine that were made by TURBOSTREETFIGHTER. When used with the properly sized exhaust tubing they physically melt turbo exhaust wheels in a matter of minutes!!! PM him sometime and see how many he burned up before he figured this out. The solution was to use a larger tubing to slow down the gasses and dissipate some of the energy. The other fix would have been to use an inconel wheel. However, these problems actually help since they can use a much larger a/r ratio and get away with it. There is a little disadvantage yes but to say it won't work good with a turbo is nonsence. Since the Renesis can evacuate the chambers much faster (larger ports, shorter duration) and there is less turbulence from area change, I don't foresee any problems or setbacks with adding a turbo. I stared at the RX-8 engine bay up close for a long time. The big problem I see is with finding a place to put the turbo. The engine mount is now on the front rotor housing and extends straight out from the engine. I definitely don't think they will ever use the twins on it again. Not after all of the 3rd gen problems. It can be done though. If they supercharge it, they would really have to use a roots style or lysholm. The problem here is that you wouldn't have the advantage of a tuned intake anymore which is a major part of the Renesis. Again, it is possible but I wouldn't think so. A centrifugal would be a better choice but now we're limited in low end boost. Who knows? I guess we'll just have to wait and see! I'm hoping for the turbo but I won't argue with a supercharger or a larger engine either.
