RX-2 gearbox / top mounted starter / RX-7 flywheel ?
Yo .
Rebuilding a twin dizzy 12a , using rx-7 FB 12a rotors , front counterweight , and flywheel . Issue , i havent seen the the rx-2 gearbox or flywheel yet , so my question is : How does the rx-7 flywheel match up with the rx-2 gearbox , and top mounted starter , and is there some differences regarding clutch / release bearing ? Thanks! |

Thanks! The clutch fork and through out bearing are on the bottom of the bell housing where the starter is located on the later engines. Not sure the flywheel will line up with the starter nor have the same tooth pitch. -billy |
The 7 flywheel won't work in its stock form because the teeth on the ring gear have the bevel toward the back for the rear mounted starter. You can heat up the ring gear and take it off very easily and flip it but I don't know if it will be lined up with the front mount starter.
I have most of the parts laying around for a future project, I can take some measurements on the top mount starter to see where the gear ends up when it is engaged with the ring gear. You do know that all the rear engine plates have the mounting holes for the top mount starter? They are the holes that the little cover in front of the slave cylinder use. |
i have the same problem i need a fisgt gen flywheel that will fit the 4 speed tranny with the starter on top to put any new cluch and pressure plate..pleace if anyone has more info on this let use know asap....

I will measure where the ring gear is on my RX2 in relation to the rear surface of the engine. And I'll measure the one on my 13B(I don't have a 12A that is together besides the duece, nor do I have a stock flywheel laying around). That should get you an idea if it will work by flipping the ring gear.
I have a feeling it will work just fine. It can be off + or - about 1/4" and still engage the starter. |
I measured the distance from the back plate of the engine to the center of the edge of the ring gear. Its 27mm on the twin dizzy 12A w/ top mount starter.
I couldn't get access to my other flywheel equiped engines but I hope this helps. |
Hey !
thanks for sharing great information , and meassurements . I`ll get back to you . |
