rusty water in housing
 

Hello I Just bought a j spec s5 turbo motor for my fb starting the conversion here soon, when I get this figured out.. I pulled the plugs and the rear lower plug was rusty and has pooo on it. I turned over the engine and rusty water shot out. the front rotor had 110 compression total. the rear that had the water in it only showed 30 to start, then after turning it a few times it moved up to 60 and I am not totally sure if it has all 3 ticks, being that there was water in it I thought one of the seals may be sticking. I poured a bit of atf in it to see if it would free it up. after the atf i tested it again and it moved up to 80. Could I have your guys thoughts on this. I am nervous about it and not sure if I should start the conversion still or if there might be a bigger issue to come. thanks -Dave

jspec engines are fairly notorious about having bad water seals or soon after running the engine. keep in mind these engines have been sitting around on shelves for 15 years and the seals have dry rotted, it could also be that the block sat in some water and it collected inside the engine.

it might be ok but truth is, save yourself some headache and research how to rebuild it yourself or send it out to be rebuilt by a professional, you probably will have to soon so you may as well be prepared.

water sitting on apex seals also = bad news, meaning it won't ever reach full compression because the seals will have rust pitting in them and they will have weak points that will make the seal more fragile to fracture and eat a rotor/housing if and when it does fail.

Thanks for the reply, also I forgot to mention that there was a good amount of radiator stop leak in the cooling system

60/60/90 is what the rear is reading, any more input on this?

My two cents. That motor needs to come apart and when water sits in it like that, everything in the combustion chamber is usually un-usable. Rotor, rear plate, center plate, all rotor seals and the rotor housing.

Rust prolly ate the coolant passages in the entire motor too. Sorry dude. It's half a core motor at best.
