quick questing if you could run any sort of different material on the housing to replace the chromium what would it be? carbon steel? ductile iron?

Mazda's housing is a Micro Channel Chrome (MCP), with a baked on graphite coating, over a steel liner, that is pressed into the aluminum casting (SIP, sheet metal insert process).

for the race cars they replaced the graphite with a ceramic.

thanks i knew what the original housings where made of im just wondering is there any material available today that would be suited better that wasnt available or due to cost was not used

people have tried ceramic coatings which would be ideal, but it is a coating and not an impregnation. the ceramic tends to peel off in sheets because it can't bond to the chromium. it may adhere better to the steel under the chromium but machining the ceramic in such a way would be virtually impossible.

ok so what ceramic coating is best suited to this application

none?

nicasil? wouldnt that work? i used to send my motocross cylinders on nicasil treatment every 50 hours back in the days....maybe harder with rotorhousings?

edit: nvm i did a search and its been covered....however it might be possible with the tech of today...

it may be possible and i have considered it but chromium has similar anti wear properties already so i'm not sure it will be much of an improvement.

nikasil seems like a great choice for side irons
