Rotary trouble

Ok so my 89 gtu decided to die on the side of the road last week during a test drive. The guy driving it red lined it for a second and the beep sounded, he then shifted down at kind of high rpms and it died. There were no unusual noises or anything just shut off. When trying to start it back up the car turns over but doesn't fire. I tried bump starting it and it popped once or back fired and went up to 2000rpms, so it has compression. I changed the plugs and pulled the fuel line to make sure it was getting gas. Checked the coil packs, they're making enough spark. The timing is a little advanced but doesn't seem like the problem. What should i do any suggestions or solutions? oh and i sprayed starting fluid in the intake and it didn't fire at all, just some smoke came out the back.

I've been told this could be a timing problem or a electrical can anyone please help me

Run a full compression test, post the results. Did it backfire through the intake? If so, check the afm or swap it for a known good one. Also check for vacuum leaks and set the timing to specs. While you're at it, wring the test driver's neck for being so ignorant.

Sounds like some one killed the motor, red lined it and did a force down shift which would push the R's way past the red line. Broke a apex and or scored the side wall, thuse the lost of compression. Push starting gets the motor spinning faster then the starter could and helps with start up compression. GOTS TO STAY A WAY FROM THEM HIGH Rss. Seen lots of motors git trashed that way

It didnt redline when he shifted down though... and the car didn't make any noise when it cut off. I've been in cars that have blown and it didn't sound like it blew. It didnt make any noise
