Rotar Aviation rebuild kit question

How are you guy's doing with RA master rebuild kits.

Latin270 12-07-07 09:45 PM

I was looking at there apex seals but I dont know about the whole kit. I'd go for Pineapple racings rebuild kit get parts from various places.

I haven't used the master kit but I have used the basic kit on several different cars over the last few years and haven't had any problems.

Project84 How many miles have you put on the engine?

Project84 12-08-07 08:48 PM

I put a few thousand on mine. Its not a daily driver. I use it for auto-x and its my summer ride when there is not a foot of snow on the ground like there has been this week.

I also used the basic kit when rebuilding a friends engine. That was 2 years ago. He hasn't mentioned any problems with it. It was his daily drive until he got married. Then they got an SUV. I don't know how many miles he put on it.

I haven't heard much of any problems with things sold by Rotary Aviation. A few years ago they had a batch of apex seals that did not meet proper specifications. They were real good about publishing the info and getting in touch with people who bought potentially bad ones and getting them replaced. Since then, I haven't heard of any problems. I usually get the basic kit from them, then go between Mazdatrix.com and Atkins Rotary to round out the rest of the parts I need to rebuild an engine. As far as I know, nobody sells a complete kit for rebuilding the engine. There are gasket kits, seal kits, rebuild kits, etc... but Not a 1 stop shopping kit with every single seal, gasket and part that would need to be replaced. Probably because some of the parts available are built to different specs like the oil control ring springs sold at Mazdatrix or the 2mm and 3mm apex seals. Plus some of the seals and gaskets used in the 86-88 engines are different sizes compared to the ones used in the 89-91 engines.

I have heard of one prob with RA seals......they seem to be too hard. they are gouging the housings. what are you planning to do with your car? stock seals are by far the most reliable, even on high boost apps....why do people not want OEM rebuild kits? because they're not aftermarket?

Atkins Dan 12-09-07 12:55 AM

Not to hyjack this thread but why not my master kit??? last I checked I have more gaskets in this kit {Intake, Exahust gaskets ect} than RA does for about the same price...

Also for thoes that want ALL OEM parts in a master kit I can do that too however it will cost more..

The car is not a daily driver im just weighing out my options the car is pretty much a drag car 71 R100 13b turbo. I am just looking for a apex seal that can take boost and handle detionation if happens. I heard RA seals were strong but also heard what you said rough on housings.

Thanks

this is the kit i have on my rebuilt 13B-t....the atkins master kit. i have a large street port with 2mm seals and a tuner said it could easily handle 20psi daily!!!! now that's saying a lot about the quality of Atkin's seals and they are probably the best aftermarket seals out there.....i heard of one rotary drag car doing something like 56psi of boost on these seals!! maybe dan can explain further but i've never heard anything bad about atkins.

Atkins Dan 12-11-07 03:42 PM

Well it was a thought and when you are ready for a kit let me know..

as for a racer running 56PSI on Atkins seals that was Carlos Gonzalez in his 73 RX3 & 88 RX7.. I have another client he is running 350 shot of NOS...

What do you guys think about Atkins rotary ? And their rebuild kits ?

marK's 12-17-07 02:59 PM

^ ive only heard good things. when it comes time for another rebuild on my 13bt, im definately getting an atkin's rebuild kit.

Latin270 12-17-07 03:10 PM

+1 for Atkins seals. Met many guys at the Pan-Ams using Atkins seals and I myself used a set on a motor 2 yrs ago and that thing still runs like a champ after 2 transplants!

13b_soldier 12-18-07 01:27 PM

Thanks for letting me know, guys. L8r.

ps: Yeah, I heard a lot of good stuff from Atkins, plus they are cheap and reliable.

I recently ordered new seals for a spare block, i went with the mazdatrix gasket set ($300), RA 2mm super seals and race springs ($330), and atkins for the rest of the rotor seals (viton oil ring inserts, solid corner seals, fd corner springs). I think the total came to $1100 or somehting..

I have an all-RA seals Bruce Turrentine rebuild in my TII now, rebuilt back in 2000-2002 time frame i believe, and it runs perfect. 60k+ rough miles on it.. a previous owner was running 14 psi on stock fuel and abused the hell out of it for a while. has been detonated multiple times and still runs like a top
