replacing cracked intake mainafold need some help
Hi
I have a 1987 rx7 turbo. And it worked fine after the engine swap but about 100 miles lator it stoped ideling but still started so i blew into one of my mainafold hoses and found a but crack in my side intake mainafold. So i have a replacement one form the old engine but i am having trouable removing the turbo and heatshield do i have to take off the turbo to get at it? also if i where to buy a to4 turbo off of ebay and replaced my stock turbo would it blow up the einge? Also there are lines comming off of the turbo and those oil lines or some kinda fluid lines because if i take them off i dont want oil everywhere. if anyone can help me please let me know thanks. |
Before you take your turbo off, drain the coolant and the oil. You'll make far less of a mess this way. There is both coolant and oil going to the stock turbo.
How did you crack the intake manifold? |
Hi
I have no ida how the mainafold got cracked maby a rock hit it or something. Now i have to put my old intake mainafold from my old engine that looks like crap. But a cracked intake mainafold would that cause it to now idel right? thanks |
i've seen a couple of hte lim's crack. right on the back bolt area right?
you gotta take the turbo off which is a PITA if you're all stock. taking off the air control valve will help you reach and see things better, though. and yes, the big turbo will blow your motor up (simple answer) unless you've got a way to tune for it. |
Hi
ya wow how did you know that its right under the back bolt. how would i tune for a biger turbo? and ya its going to be realy hard to get the turbo off i took apart a dead engine after i did my new engine swap and the heatshield on the stock turbo was the hardest thing to get off. So like i have 2 stock turbos could i put both of them on the engine with out blowing it up just wondering thanks. |
Hi
the crack inst that big instead of replacing the hole thing i might just user jb weld and see if i cant sell it that way but i already took eveything off of the side. Am i going to need new seals or can i just use the old ones? |
JB Weld isn't going to hold it. If you want to repair it, take it to a place that can TIG weld aluminum. That would be the best bet. You'll still need to take it off of the car though.

but for the price to get it welded, you could probably get one from the forum...
there's tons of tuning options, but basicaly, ems is where everyone ends up, so that's probably about what you'll want for cost, reliability, ease of use, and flexibility. microtech, haltech, etc... the 2 stock turbo idea isn't bad, except you'll spend soooooooo much money finding someone to build you a manifold, then your spoolup would be terrible, hp would STILL be limited, and that's assuming you were a magician and could find a way to fit both of them in there. here's one idea for a setup--plan on spending some money. ebay exhaust manifold $100 60-1 turbo, .84 or 96 hot side $700 wastegate $300 exhaust mods $200 intercooler $400 with pipes that part should be about enough to get it bolted up, then you'll need: engine management: $1000-1500 tuning: $500ish and that still doesn't touch all the little stuff you'll need-which could easily work its way over the $1000 mark. it's an expensive job! |

i've never seen a shop that does things for free. 2 points for the nice guy n everything, but if you're good at something, you deserve to get paid for it.
