Reliablility

HOw reliable are the 3rd generation RX-7's. There is one for sale that i am seriousl condiderng buying, it is a 93 Rx-7 with 89000 miles on it. as far as i know its stock, and i will be keeping the car mostly stock i will probobly jsut put new exhost and a BOV in it. How come everyone here says they have a love/hate relationship because i wont be able to afford repair costs on a rotory engine if its ganna break down on me all teh time.

I'd stay away from the 3rd Gen RX-7's. I know people whose engines' been rebuilt 4 times within 100K on chassis. It's because they race these cars. When you race, you rebuild your engine each race--if you're a professional racer, that is.

Not at all, get a dp, and other various realibilty mods (no seq. turbo) Rotary's just don't break down on their own. 98% of the time it is beacause the driver has taken precautionary steps to maintain his engine. Something simple as not consantly checking the coolant level, then the engine pops, and then the 16 year old driver spreads the word on how shitty a rotary engine is.........

If you want the most reliable rotary car, get a 2nd gen NA s5

89-91 was I think the best year of RX7 as far as reliability. I got 180K mi before touching the drivetrain, 195K before touching the engine, and I drive mine hard for a daily driver.

Reliability is based upon how you or previous owners have maintained the vehicle. If it's treated like a race car, it should be maintained like one and sadly most people don't understand this, thus why they break before an OEM version that has been driven nicely does. This goes for anything; people are just spooked about the different motor and they think it's "scary" and so spread rumors about it.

Reliability mods make a big difference. If you get a car with a downpipe (the most important Reli mod) and the previous owner took care of it should last a long time. Unfortunately most people don't understand how to take care of a car and RX-7, especially 3rd generations, don't react well to ignorance from their owners.
