Rebuilding 88 Anny. Rotors are rusting....
 

Hey guys I am rebuilding a 88 Anny Rx-7 or atleast trying to :). First time rebuilding any car, anyhow i am down to the cleaning part of the process and everything was going fine, i was conpulsive and got everything nice and shiny where i could see my reflection in the rotors... Then I went to wash the rotors in water to remove the chemicals from it and as i was wiping it down to dry it off i could see the rag discoloring, turning redish. Well I look an the rotors are begining to react i geuss and rust. I check my other rotor which was still in the chemical and it is perfectly fine. (I am using concentrated Simple Green). So I wiped off the surface rust and stuck it pack in the SG and scrubed it clean but now it still a little discolored. It only formed in the circle groves around the center.

Anyhow, my question. When I take it out of SG what should I do with it to prevent rusting? Should I just compress air dry it right away and dont worry about washing it off? Or should I wash it and compress air it and wipe away the surface rust....? Please help. Don't wanna hurt my babies :)

Put a thin coat of engine oil on them if you are not going to be firing up the motor for a while. If it is only surface rust it won't matter much, esp if you are going to be getting her running soon.

just make sure before you start to build up the rotors you thoroughly clean the side side grooves and the corner seal recesses, and of course the apex seal grooves as well. You want all the springs to move smoothly and easily.

Yup yup. It will be flawless trust me :) One more question before I go out and do this and f something up. I was wondering if it is ok to polish the rotors? I figured it would actually be better to prevent carbon build up but I was wondering if anyone has done this and found a negative to it.

i just used the compound that came with the polishing discs for my Dremel. it seemed to work just fine.

as stated earlier, just rub a coat of motor oil or gear oil over the rotors. i actually plaster them with oil and wrap them in newspaper until i'm ready to assemble the engine.
