question about rebuild
 

Ok i have a 93 rx7 with a 13b motor, i was wondering how could you tell if the motor needs to be rebuilt. Right now you can drive the car, it runs great and has good compression, the only thing is that when you shut the motor down all the coolant in the system is sucked into the motor, so when you restart the car the coolant signal comes on. I was wondering if this means i need a rebuild or if when i relocated my ast tank this could have caused the problem. Any advise would help thanks joe..

Do you get any sweet smelling white smoke for the first little bit after startup? Sounds like your coolant seals may have gone out. Does the car overheat at all?

Yes this sounds exactly like my car it will run very hot at time, and yes it does blow a little white smoke after startup.

Well your coolant seals are more than likely gone, so a rebuild is in order. Some people have found a suitable temporary fix by using CRC Block Weld, but I have not done it personally. If you want to go that route, do a search for "block weld" or something similer. But, ultimately the engine will need to be rebuilt.

yea me and my dad are ganna tear the motor down and rebuild it, along with porting it to. thanks for the help

Rotor housings
 

My Dad and I are gonna rebuild my13b. He dont want to mess around so he asked me to locate new rotor housings. Any suggestions on were I can purchase them for a good price. Also I want to build it more than stock(porting) and I will not us Nitros are 2mm apex good enough if I say buy them from Atkins. Also can we port the motor ourselves. My Dad is an engineer and has a lot of machine shop experience. Is there like a site were I can get a template to lay over the stock port that shows how much you can port it out too.

Got the motor ready to lift out all by myself in just two evenings. Labeled every wires, hoses dad said not bad for a 17 year old.

Your dad is a wise man. New rotor housings are a great idea. Check out Rynberg's rebuild thread in the 3rd gen section for some rebuild info/options. I don't have a source, but do a search and see what comes up. Maybe Ray at Malloy Mazda, Mazdatrix or Racing Beat?

Regarding porting, Racing Beat was one of the first to offer porting templates. Their ports are pretty reliable and proven. Others have tried porting templates from newer sources with questionable results. The newly popular sources on forums aren't always the best. Forums sometimes hype things up improperly.

The stock OEM Mazda 2mm seals work well. Do a search in the 3rd gen section or check out the FAQ sticky (4th thread).

You might want to consider Viton coolant o-rings and seals. They stand up to heat better and are obviously made of better quality materials.

Ray at Malloy Mazda (number on FAQ thread) has great deals on a rebuild gasket kit that will get you all the gaskets needed to properly rebuilt the motor. Don't forget a new Fuel Pulsation Dampener (they go all the time and you never want to have to get back down into the rats nest to replace. search for FPD and fire), get the injectors cleaned (its cheap and you don't want to have to go back down there), new coolant hoses (cheap insurance) and OEM clamps when needed (worm gear clamps tend to cut into the hoses and can cause premature failure) and clutch fork (they break pretty regularly and only cost about $20).

Once you have the clutch off, you can decide if you need to replace that. Take lots of pics and label things. Getting it out isn't as hard as getting everything back in and working. Good luck.

Oh and get a downpipe if you don't already have one. Used is fine.
