Pulling Engine
 

hey everyone...

I've got my 1990 motor stripped down to the block, and need to pull it in order to rebuild it. Does anyone have any preference on how to do this? I've never pulled an engine before, and was wondering how i disengage the engine from the tranny (already have it unbolted). Also, do i need to support the transmission before i remove the engine?

Is it easier to remove the engine and the tranny at the same time?

i just pulled my engine last night for the first time, (thanks for the help Ben) and I can tell you that if you know what you are doing, or are being walked through it, it is easy.
How much do you have left on the block? is the wiring harness unhooked? Is the downpipe/header disconnected? Let us know how much is unhooked, then we can tell you what to do.
It is much easier to remove the tranny with the engine, than engine first and tranny later.

Tell me how much is left, and I'll help through the last of it.

I've got the following removed...

1). header
2). the intake manifolds (all of 'em :-))
3). wiring harnesses
4). starter motor
5). starter motor wiring harness disconnected
6). Radiator out
7). All oil lines disconnected, etc...

It's stripped down to the block, and I've removed the tranny to engine mount bolts and the motor mount bolts (but I can easily put them back in). The front end of the car is also up on jack stands (see the pics)

oops, forgot a few things...

The A/C compressor is disconnected from the engine (pushed out of the way). I was also wondering where the best lifting points for the engine were (i've got a chain and a hoist :-)).

I attached a pic. of the car on stands -- is it possible to remove the engine without lowering the car back down onto its wheels?

looks like you removed more than you needed. one of the lifting points is visible in your photo. this is the loop on the front near the CAS, the other is normally on the intake manifold near the passenger side firewall. a simple bolt through the chain into the engine will work fine. support the trans from underneath with a jack or some wood blocks. then lift the engine off the motor mounts and pull toward the front of the car and motor should seperate from the trans. be careful it does not swing out of control and damage something. car may need to be flat on ground for hoist to lift motor over the radiator support. good luck and go slow and easy.

Wow that was easy :cool:

I ended up quickly bolting on the Lower intake manifold and the Dynamic Chamber (to use the lifting point there) and them ran chains to those two points. I also ran a chain to another bolt hole on the Dynamic Chamber. After that i supported the tranny w/ a Jack and pulled the motor up off of the motor mounts. I've got the radiator removed, so i climbed inside the engine compartment (must have looked pretty funny :D ) and just pulled the motor away from the tranny w/ a little jiggling -- worked like a charm.
All this is of course after removing the engine: tranny mounting bolts, wiring harnesses, starter motor, and all the other goodies that come attached to the block :)

Now all i need to do is figure out how to get the Flywheel / Eccentric shaft bolt off...

Horsepower crazed 17 year old with great plans in mind:D

uses a very large socket(sorry I can't remember size, my memory is not so good) and a very good impact wrench. try taking motor to a good repair shop and see if they will do it for some beer money.

I forgot what size metric it was but a 2 1/8 fits the flywheel nut and like tims said you definately need a very good impact wrench because that sucker is really on there.

Thanks for the info on removing both the motor and the flywheel bolt (nut?) -- I should be able to borrow the required equipment within the next few days and start tearing that sucker apart :D

the flywheel nut is a 54mm socket, this is the way i do mine motors, you need a very long strong arm to fit on the socket, i made mine out of a long strong piece of iron rod. and i made a bracket (looks like a number 7) that bolts onto the flywheel and onto the engine block, so that the flywheel doesnt turn. if u want a pic of the 7 bracket send me a email at dnmj@yahoo.com

P.S. I got the flywheel nut off on sunday 10-29-01, and today (monday) i'll try to get an impact-wrench saft 19mm socket for the bolt on the front of the e-shaft. I looked in through the exhaust ports to find one destroyed rotor -- anyone got a rear rotor for an '89-'91 N/A motor? :D

I've got to pull one next weekend. A guy near me that works on RX-7s said it's easier to pull the tranny out with it.
