possible transmission and gearbox problem
Model is an 1986-87 S4 with an S5 turbo 2 engine.
I havent yet taken the time to look if its a manual or turbo transmission. Problem: 1. revving the engine above 4k rpms, a cliciking/rattling sound comes from the transmission or gearbox. If I hold the stick shift during this time, the clicking stops or is less. 2. similarly, there is a chafing or metal grinding sound coming from transmission/gearbox area. I cant really pinpoint the source of the sound yet. I am told that the first problem is due to gearbox which is a little worn out. Are there any other possibilities? As for the 2nd, I have been told, that its a synchromesh problem. My problem is the sound never occurs when my mechanic is in the car... lol. Car doesnt like me. Does anyone know what be wrong? |
Synchros have nothing to do with rattling or noises.
Synchros going bad makes the transmission hard to shift into gear with the engine running. -Ted |
Thanx a bunch, will have to source for a gearbox then.
At the moment, I'm working with a new mechanic whom I dont know too well but is supposed to be a rotary specialist and thus far he's done quite a good job fixing my problems. I just need to know from other sources what possible things to watch out for so I know what's being done. Is there anything else in the transmission that I should be watching out for? |
