over heating n/a while ideling why? help
 

my 87 n/a is getting hot good fan good cap good thermo good i mean all new what the hek ? if any of you rotor heads can tell me what i havent looked over yet . it is blowing cold air here and there then sometimes heat i dont get it .

Bad water pump or bad radiator...

about the only thing that can be bad in a radiator is a leak or a clog. Its just a heat exchanger. Hot water comes in and cool air blows over it to remove the heat.

Over heating at idle can be an inoperative water pump as mentioned above, inoperative cooling fan or a bad thermostat. Thermostats will fail to open at the specified temp. If this happens, coolant will not be able to flow out of the block and into the radiator.

Water pumps are kinda hard to diagnose because the pulley will rotate even though the shaft going to the impeller wheel could be broken. I've also removed water pumps where the blades on the impeller wheel are broken off from corrosion.

To trouble shoot your problem, start with the cheapest and easiest thing first. Replace the thermostat. If it don't fix the problem, drain the radiator and run water through to flush it out or see if its clogged. last, pull the water pump to see if its bad.

thanks dude i am hoping its that cheap,if that does fix it im still going to flush though...just to keep the seven safe

Thats a good idea to flush and replace the coolant. If you haven't done it since you've own the car, its no telling when the last owner did.

I got your PM. If the coolant temp goes up when you are parked, but then you drive and the temp goes down, it sounds like a bad clutch in the fan. When the coolant temp goes up (like when your engine is running but car isnt moving), the clutch engages and the fan starts pulling air. When you start driving and ram air is flowing through the radiator, the clutch disengages and the fan is just free-wheeling.

hey,i have a90tII and i was kinda wondering if anyone can answer this question.....runs good but when it warms up it starts running kinda funny..i think maybe my oxygen sensor is not working right.the car is like running rich but it flys and still goes like abat out a h-ll.there is just alot of fuel smell on the oil stick more than norm....im hoping i can get to the bottem of this. ive heard the wire that comes out the computer for the oxygen sensor gets bad or looses connection to the sensor on second gens....???????? well try to reply someone, would love to get to the problem and get it running clean..what about plugs??????????????????

get a new radiator cap

The ECU only polls the O2 sensor when you are cruising at a steady speed and the throttle position hasn't changed after 3 or 4 seconds. The ECU will start sampling the exhaust fumes via the O2 sensor to set up the most fuel efficient air fuel ratio for better fuel economy.

well......im afraid eventually screwing up the engine from running so rich to long. i been told it has a fuel problem but it just had new injectors put in and new computers too..and the tIIs are known for detination if they are to rich with to much boost right?????????????please reply ill be on line for a while or email me................thanks

running rich will cause carbon to build up in the motor, but it doesn't cause detonation. Running lean will cause detonation. What size injectors did you put in? If they are bigger than stock, the ECU won't know, and it will give them an injector pulse suitable for the stock injectors. This will cause a larger injector to inject way too much fuel and run the engine rich.

i wanna thank all you for your input on overheating,its fixed.all it was is the guy i bought it from, he never put a thermostat in it. when i decided to take the thermo housing off to find out what was wrong i couldnt believe my eyes......no thermo in it maybe he took it out over the summer or something i dont know,but now it runs excellent thanks again guys......
